  1. When you see this constantly in job descriptions "This role is an on-site role..." it's surprising to also see news articles like this 👇

"Employers might be being encouraged to let people work from home if they are struggling with fuel costs, but not everyone hopes they heed the message."

  2. This week I fixed a laptop for a client. It was the second time this client has had me do work for her. The first invoice was in 2016.

2016. It’s been nine years. Her husband isn’t in IT, but he’s a tech-savvy person, so he provides most of her tech support. But when he couldn’t resolve the issue, she still remembered me and came back to me for service in 2025.

That’s customer loyalty. Treat them right. They remember. They’ll come back.

  3. I want to reach out: Do you know any good(!) paper for benefits or downsides of online course? Or of online vs. on-site courses?

I did a little research, found nothing compelling, but I am _not_ an expert in this field and might very well be overlooking something.

  4. Today I went to a client location to do a site walk for an expansion they’re doing. I got the details and then immediately scheduled a site meeting for tomorrow with a fiber installer to get a quote for connectivity to the new space. But that’s really not the story...

While I was in the existing office space, the Business Manager said, “Also, the guys are complaining about the Wi-Fi, so if you have time, would you take a look at that?” I said sure. When I’d finished the main activities I tracked down their Scheduler/Foreman and asked him for details about the Wi-Fi problem: “Is it everywhere, or in certain places? Is it all the time, or sporadic?”

He said the Wi-Fi was consistently bad in his office on the second floor. That was really the only complaint. They had remodeled an old storeroom into his office, and it had never been included in the original Wi-Fi plan. The Wi-Fi was truly awful in his office. But – he had an open Ethernet jack!

So I installed an additional Access Point right in his office. A few minutes later he came back in, just as I was finishing up the speed tests: 540 Mbps down, 41 Mbps up. Since they’re paying for 500/35, I’m pretty pleased. I gave him the SSID and key, and he connected – you should’ve seen the smile on his face.

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to be a hero. The simplest things...

  5. Some more of our favourite shots from the reconditioning project at Singleton Station with OnRail.

From the first shot to the final flyover, we truly enjoyed bringing this projects story to life. Looking forward to many more projects just like this! 🏗️ 🛠️

  6. Night & Day on the Tracks 🚧 🎥

We’ve been on site with the OnRail crew capturing a 3-day reconditioning project at Singleton Station — from pre-starts and excavators to night works and drone flyovers.

Timelapse, twilight, and everything in between. Can’t wait to share the final edit.

  7. Something I was thinking about today is, when you hear about self-hosting or when you are self-hosting. Do you imagine / use on-site hardware or something like a VPS?

If you are self-hosting what are your reasons for doing it the way you do. I know there are arguments for both. This isn't a vs. battle lol. I'm just curious.

    Boosts encouraged.

  8. Waiting for my train and going through slides of a BOF from the #isc25 . Apparently, students prefer tutored online courses.

I as a lecturer always prefer onsite courses. Spiced with lots of exercises. Such that I get an immediate impression of proceedings and reception of the material.

Yes, I understand the need-to-travel overhead when living in somewhat remote areas. On the other hand: All those demanding online or even hybrid courses - have you considered that the average participant might learn less? The literature supporting online courses at least is rather underwhelming.

Plus, actually meeting people is way better than chatting online. Same with conferences. I just me people from @SURF and other places whom I only met online before. Such a difference!

Then again, I only travel by train - which cannot expected by everyone ...

  9. We had a blast – KubeCon 2025 was great! 🥳 The four days in London flew by – compared to last year in Paris, the event was again an unforgettable experience, this time in England's capital. It's the flagship conference of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and brings together users & technologists from leading open source and cloud native communities. 🤝 But the restaurant, bar and cultural evenings were also a hit, according to our team on site. 🍽️🍻 #kubecon #recap #onsite #nine

  11. Time for part 3 of my guide for #onsite #selfhosting: register your domain, set up #DNS zone and automatically update dynamic IP via #DynDNS.
This post took me a bit longer to write, because most of the things I'm touching here are new to me.

Again I'm recommending EU-based services and open source software @yunohost .

As always, more than happy to get some feedback!

  12. @ErikUden another reminder how little control of the data you have in VPS . #onsite #hosting may be viable alternative for smaller projects. What to do with larger ones?

  13. Today I wrote rather extensively about my #hardware recommendation for #onsite #selfhosting.
We use the same mini PC for #home #cinema. I'll write more regarding #domain registration, configuration and #software in the coming weeks.
    Stay tuned!

  14. I'm starting a set of blog posts focused on #selfhosting adventure. It's focused on #onsite hosting and will recommend #EU based providers/services.
I'm based in #Spain, so some providers are from here.
The first post is just an overview and focuses on #internet connection and #port #forwarding.
Later I'll focus on #domain setup, #hardware and finally on @yunohost apps and services :)
    Happy to get feedback!
