Seafood NZ, the industry body that represents New Zealandโs commercial fishing interests, put out one of the most mind-bogglingly tone deaf press releases recently in response to the new David Attenborough documentary, โOceanโ.
Their response to the documentary, which highlights the dangers posed by bottom trawling and industrial fishing, was to claim that the way that New Zealand performs bottom trawling would somehow make for a great birthday present for Sir David.

The #OceanFilm is worth seeing just to see how effective Sir David Attenborough is as a science presenter, even at almost 100 years old and after 70 years of doing it.

Iโd like to have a word with the scientific advisors. Among other things, phytoplankton doesnโt remove 1/3 of our COโ emissions (the ocean removes 1/4, but itโs abiotic) and the ocean doesnโt produce half the Oโ we breathe (itโs responsible for half the photosynthesis on Earth, but it also consumes all that oxygen).
