  1. New paper out in *New Zealand Plant Protection* 🌾

Buddenhagen CE et al. (2026) report AHAS‑inhibitor herbicide resistance in recent Alopecurus myosuroides (black‑grass) incursions into New Zealand.

Two incursion‑linked seed lots were tested. One showed very high resistance (>10× the label rate to achieve 90% control), while the other showed reduced sensitivity. This indicates that AHAS‑inhibitor herbicides should not be used for black‑grass incursion responses in New Zealand.

Given the widespread evolution of resistance overseas, future incursions are increasingly likely to carry resistance traits. Strong border biosecurity, certified seed, avoiding seed from infested regions, and early resistance screening are critical.

  2. A major NZ research fund is being “paused” for a year because apparently it’ll all be too much. #nzscience- this will see more science positions go. #Endeavour.

  3. Again, those comments were from Professor Nicola Gaston, via the Science Media Centre NZ. Here's hoping decision-makers take heed of these comments, and those from other leading experts in the STEM sector #nz #science #nzscience

And the review will find we are losing scientists, technicians and not providing any real incentives for school leavers to take up a career in the field of science.
Cuts are cutting our throats. Do your job Collins.

  5. It seems at this stage there is no detail and/or plan what the national research priorities actually are and how this strategy with a new name is operationally different from the previous national science challenges. #nzscience #nzpol

  6. 2/3 "It’s hard to believe that when we created Sciblogs in 2009, the iPhone was only two years old, being a ‘Youtuber’ wasn’t really a thing and Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok didn’t exist.
    ...
We had the opinion pages of the major newspapers and news websites,.... We had a healthy blogging ecosystem, ranging from Kiwiblog to Public Address, but nowhere where science nerds could congregate and argue in rambling comment threads."

  7. 1/3 Ah well, fare well :(

"Some of Aotearoa’s best-known science communicators have contributed to Sciblogs, from Shaun Hendy, who says much of his writing from his first two books evolved from his blogging, to Siouxsie Wiles, who started blogging early in her arrival to NZ and covered such topics as the Fonterra botulism scare that helped get her on the radar of journalists in need of a scientist who could communicate clearly."
