  1. With the absolute failure of #NZMedia to adhere to any form of ethical nonpartisan journalism and with the increasing amount of misleading information being presented as fact it's important to have alternative sources of information and analysis regarding #NZPol particularly with less than 6 months till the next #NZElection on 7 November 2026.

Paul the Other One's YouTube channel is definitely worth subscribing to as is his website: paultheotherone.com

Paul produces witty and simple to follow information that helps clarify the shady agenda setting being carried out by NZ msm and his website provides important info, links to various groups, events, fact checking and a newsletter.

  2. @DodgyKnee @ArrestJK It's interesting the way Newshub framed it as "Labour leader CH breaks protocol to call for ceasefire". I'm not sure what protocol was broken. He sought support from incoming govt that was refused so he made the call as Labour Party leader. Apart from being the very basic humanity response this call along with the new CGT/Wealth Tax policies will probably stand Chippy and Labour in a far better position for the upcoming #NZPol early 2024 #NZElection.

  3. If the special votes are similar to 2017 (more similar to 2023 than 2020s results) this is how the seats could fall. National would lose 3. Lab and Greens each pick up one and there'd be a slightly smaller overhang #nzelection #nzpol

  4. #ShowerThoughts: I wonder how many more votes the Leighton Baker Party would have got in the #NZelection, if he'd called it the Bacon Later Party instead?

  5. CW: NZ Politics

Chris Hipkins sacrificed climate justice and economic justice in vain pursuit of centre-right votes Labour was never going to keep after 2020. First came the bonfire of climate policies, now comes the bonfire of votes. He must go. #nzpol #nzelection

  6. I got a notification from #RNZ calling the #election, and when I clicked through to the story, only 6% of the vote had been counted.

  7. Twilight across the valley, from my balcony a few evenings ago.

Election night, so I get to watch what the rest of the country did with their votes…🫣

    Maybe I’ll focus on a movie and a new beer: a strong ‘Mexi-Coco’ porter (9.3%!), brewed with cacao nibs+red chillies+vanilla+cinnamon. Sounds good😊

  8. OK… #nzelection day.

No more political messages. I can’t say enough how much that’s a relief.

Get out and vote! It only needs you and your address. For help, see vote.nz

On election day, among the rules⬇️

So, it seems we’ve entered a period where we cannot lie to try influence voters 🫢

A post by Graeme Edgeler points at this:
    Electoral Act 1993
199A Publishing false statements to influence voters

  10. #NZpol #nzelection 'Promoters' pushing political views

    Good work from Farah.

A handy table of all of the groups involved is included at the end.

Some of the "no" responses to "Promoting a party or candidate" are surely disingenuous?

  11. i voted today! 🗳️

it's a bit sad there isn't a sticker for it anymore. but i guess i got some democracy for my two ticks. and i'm ignoring the polls and negativity and hoping for a progressive government. 🤞

now i can give my blood pressure and nerves a break by switching off from all the political posturing, policy lies, disagreeable dudes (luxon, seymour, peters, bishop, etc) and lazy media commentary for a few days. 🙉 😌

  12. Performed my civic duty and voted in the general election this morning. Voting ends on Saturday 14 October when voting places close at 7pm. You can find your nearest voting place at vote.nz/2023-general-election/

  13. My cartoon in today's www.stuff.co.nz & in glorious print thepost.co.nz/a/nz-news/350078

The NZ campaign trail is ablaze!

But, & I'm not the only one who's noticed, there's been very little talk of various communities... Do we matter?

  14. I’ve never seen a #NZelection run up where there have been so many National hoardings. Very few for any other party in #ŌtautahiChristchurch. No matter which part of the city I’m in. It’s like people just want a change but they don’t care it’ll cost them a fortune in reduced services - because how else are they going to pay for it?
If it was really about reducing spending, they would show the costings.

  15. Cut the melodramatic poll reporting — this is just settling back to pre-Jacinda/COVID levels, and Seymour’s Act party is the only one really taking a dive.

  16. I can think of three "voter advice" sites.

S works with people with intellectual disabilities and brain injury and observed that none of these sites (yet) offer guidance/ questions well suited for the folks she's supporting.

    - nz.votecompass.com/
    - newzealand.isidewith.com/
    - policy.nz

What other such sites exist? Do any of them do this well? Who might need to hear that?

  17. CW: NZ Politics

Leighton Baker has officially registered his own right wing party for this years #NZelection - creatively named 'The Leighton Baker Party'.

I was wondering if any other political parties have ever been named after their leader. It strikes me as both limiting (the party couldn't function after he is finished with politics) and the height of narcissism.

  18. If the Labour Caucus choose a new PM with the energy and enthusiasm that Jacinda Ardern demonstrated on taking over the role when Andrew Little resigned as PM, they will succeed in the October elections. Not quite deja Vu but very close.
Communication is her forte and her successor needs that skill set as well. It would be a missed opportunity of another Labour term if her successor stumbled on that alone.
Huge shoes to fill and as they say in show biz, a hard act to follow

  19. Sometime today (AFAIK) we get the final results for the NZ Parliamentary elections and the two referenda, after the counting of an unprecedented number of special votes.

  20. Hey kiwis, if you haven't done it already, remember to vote! Polling is open now and will close at 7pm, but you want to get it done well before that. Remember that if you haven't registered already, you can do it when you get there. Remember also that the outcomes of the two referenda will affect your life and those of your loved ones whether or not you care about which parties form a government.

  21. The Political Compass folk finally released their analysis of the NZ election, about a month before advance voting begins:

  22. Here's another online tool for the imminent NZ election, put together by Scoop.co.nz:
    nextelection.com/

A shame it seems to depend on third-party Javascript from Cloudflare, and the app version is only available in the Goggle Prey Store, not F-Droid.

  23. In the 2017 election I really wanted to give NZ First the benefit of the doubt. Despite their social conservatism, their economic policies were well to the left of NZ Labour (according to PoliticalCompass.org anyway). But in government they've consistently blocked leftward policy moves (like CGT). With Banks and Wigmore getting involved, if they get back into Parliament, they will likely be even more toxic.
