  1. "Partial Evacuation Rescind, Phase 2 residents".

Clearly someone responsible for communications in the Emergency Dept favours jargon over communicating.

  6. According to officials, the wildfires in the western Halifax region are now fully contained and under control.

Thanks to the rain gods, and the hard work fire crews, and to everyone who came in from other communities, provinces, and countries.

I've got a bunch of feelings about this, and my home was never under threat. Never even close to it. I can't imagine what people from Upper Tantallon and Hammonds Plains are feeling like today.

Resources continue to be redistributed to Shelburne County to aid with the fires there.

I'll continue to monitor other socials and pass along anything I see, but I expect things to slow down substantially. So, thanks everyone for following along and spreading word as far as you could, and goodnight.

  7. After a night of rain, I woke up to news that the Tantallon fire that's burning just outside of Halifax proper is no longer considered "out of control".

That's great! Fire crews now believe the fire will not spread any further, given current conditions. Extra resources are now being redirected to help with the Shelburne fires.

It's worth noting that the fire is very much still an active concern. It's actively burning, and it's burning hot. It's going to take a
lot of water before emergency services feel secure that its truly out everywhere. Especially since it's not currently out anywhere. But we're expected to get a lot of rain this week, so fingers crossed! #HalifaxFire #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia #NSWildfires

  8. People from across the city, across the province, and across the country have come together to help and support the communities upset and destroyed by wildfires here in Nova Scotia this week. It's been incredible to see.

People are donating prom dresses and suits to high school students who have been displaced by the fires:

Lindsay Moussi, owner of the White Sails Bakery in Upper Tantallon, has been making hot meals for firefighters with the support of the local community and grocery stores:

  9. Nova Scotia Health will be providing mental health services to evacuees at the Canada Games Centre in Clayton Park all weekend. If you've been displaced by the fire and need someone to talk to, they're there for you.

  10. Earlier today, the evacuation order for the eastern edge of evac zone was rescinded for the following neighbourhoods:

    - Lucasville Area, including Timber Trails
    - Hammonds Plains south of Pinetree Crescent
    - Stillwater Lake/Haliburton Hills Area
    - Tantallon Plaza

This should allow about 8000 people to return home for the weekend.

  11. Today, the city gave people who were believed to have had their homes or other property destroyed a bus tour of the affected neighbourhoods.

I can't imagine that was an easy trip for those who took part.

They'll be having other tours for people whose property has been damaged. If you know someone who has, and they haven't registered with 311 yet, please let them know that they could have an opportunity to see the extent of the damage to their home.

  12. I'm seeing chatter about people denying the fires are caused by climate change because they're believed to have been sparked by human activity.

This is such an incredibly bad take.

We've basically been living in a drought this year. We had minimal snowfall this past winter, and even less rain this spring, leaving forests drier than they've been... possibly ever.

On top of that, we've had two significant hurricanes in 4 years, killing a significant number of trees and leaving them to become exceedingly dry deadfall. Those hurricanes were driven by climate change.

Climate change has created the conditions where our actions that previously wouldn't have caused such disasters now will. Precautions that people spent a lifetime learning -- which were probably, at best, barely enough, and at worst, totally insufficient at the time -- now no longer apply. Things people are accustomed to doing now risk the health and safety of thousands.

Climate change has radically altered the risk associated with our actions. But people are not good at recognizing that. People are really awful at adapting to slow, invisible changes. People resent having to change their behaviours when they've never noticed those behaviours leading to harm.

I get that people want a scapegoat to drag through the streets and force out of town, but pointing fingers are a couple of people who may have failed to take the proper precautions this once doesn't do anything but distract from the part where we're firmly in the "find out" phase of dumping millions of years worth of stored carbon into our atmosphere in just a couple of centuries.

You could be the next person who didn't realize they weren't being responsible and create the next disaster. Don't fall for the "individual responsibility" bullshit.

  13. We woke up to a small amount of rain this morning. Just enough to darken the pavement, really, and knock some of the smoke out of the air. There's a fine layer of ash and pollen all over my car.

I have no idea if it was even enough moisture to reach the ground over the forest fires. From the air, it looks like the Tantallon fire has turned a good chunk of the burn zone into charcoal, and charcoal burns
hot. 500 degrees Celsius or more. Stretched out over hundreds of hectares, this can create enough heat to evaporate light rain before it comes near the ground.

And it's even worse when there's a roaring fire, which burn hotter, and produce strong updrafts.

Hopefully it dampened the surrounding woodlands and structures, at least. Anything's good while we wait for the real rain to start this evening.

  14. The IWK has put together some tips and talking points for caretakers discussing natural disasters or other emergencies with children. 15. Full Gospel Church in Bedford is offering up space for evacuees to relief from the heat, food and drink, and pet supplies. Their doors are open until 10pm tonight if anyone needs the help. #HalifaxFire #TantallonFire #ShelburneFire #NSWildfires #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia

  16. I can taste the smoke again this morning, and my eyes are stinging and gravelly. The winds are blowing in from the west, carrying smoke from both the Tantallon fire and the Shelburne fires into the city.

The air quality forecast for today isn't great, and the BlueSky Canada smoke forecast suggest that Halifax is going to be in the path of the Shelburne smoke all day long. It also predicts that it's going to get particularly bad starting around 6 PM this evening (attached image) and stay bad until about 2 AM (though it doesn't actually predict that the heavy plume will form until 10 AM, which is still 40 minutes from now as of posting; I'm guessing this is related to predicted or assumed firefighting efforts).

With temperatures predicted to exceed 30 degrees today, it's a tough one to keep the windows closed for, but it's still probably the best to do so for as long as possible today. To try and prevent things from getting too warm, make sure both interior and exterior windows are closed, if you have airlocked windows, and close all curtains and blinds. Bust out the fans, if you have them, to circulate air. If you're lucky enough to have a furnished basement, consider retreating to it.

  17. The Canadian Red Cross has launched a new fundraising campaign in support of victims of the Atlantic Canada wildfires. The Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada Fires Appeal is separate from the Nova Scotia government's $500 support payment, and donations will be used to aid people most impacted by the fires.

Donations are being accepted at the Canadian Red Cross's website (
    https://www.redcross.ca) or by phone at 1-800-418-1111. #HalifaxFire #TantallonFire #NSWildfires #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia

  18. Nova Scotia Health is hosting a drop-in clinic at the Canada Games Centre today, from 9 AM - 5 PM.

Insurance companies will also have representatives on site to help people affected by the fires with their claims.

  19. HRM is asking people with homes or businesses within the area of significant impact (map, attached) to register with the city so that 311 staff can contact those whose homes or businesses have been destroyed.

  21. No change in the Tantallon fire being reported overnight. It doesn't appear to have grown at all.

NASA's FIRMS site doesn't want to load for me today, so today's map is from the DNR's Canadian Wildland Fire Information Service (
https://cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca/interactive-map). Unlike FIRMS, it doesn't store map coordinates in the URL, so you'll have to hunt for it yourself if you follow the link. #HalifaxFire #TantallonFire #NSWildfires #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia
