  7. Toying around with #Dosbox i „re-learned“ the "PATH" command in the 'autoexec.bat'. And found the simplicity of renaming exe files in those days.

For example a part of my PATH looks like this: "C:\NC5;C:\NC4;C:\NC3;C:\NC1". That's 4 different installations of #NortonCommander versions. If i type "nc" at the prompt NC5 will be started because it's the first one in the row that can be found. Simple logic.

  8. Hey, #DosBox fans! Do you have a clue, why #NortonCommander 5.5 always throws the error "Can't open C:\NC5\ansi2858.set" when i try to open a file via F3 (View)? Indeed, this file is not there and also not included in the setup disks. When i click "OK" it works flawlessly.
Other installations of NC Versions 4, 3 and 1 don't throw this error. What am i missing? Research for "ansi2858.set" did give me nearly no results.

  9. In an interesting twisty sidetrack of events, I found myself installing #FreeDOS on my newly acquired #Commodore PC. It took a gazillion years, but otherwise went fine. Without having investigated it, I would assume the reason is that the install process is unpacking zip files, and this machine is a little slow.

Havent had a chance to really test it yet, but it's running #NortonCommander without any issues. The root files are named a little different and there are some new commands, but I believe their goal is to be almost 100% backwards compatible. Native FAT32 support too.

It comes with a boat of additional packages, but I'm uncertain as to how I can install those with the fancy built-in package installer, without a CD-ROM or USB drive.

  14. @SecurityWriter did you noticed ghisler.com/accueil.htm that rebuilt a good close clone of NC, for a very long time ?

For “imaging” PCs, I’m using ActiveBackup for Business on synology’s DSM (no license needed) that can do snapshots and bare-metal restores, if that could help.
