  3. In an interesting twisty sidetrack of events, I found myself installing #FreeDOS on my newly acquired #Commodore PC. It took a gazillion years, but otherwise went fine. Without having investigated it, I would assume the reason is that the install process is unpacking zip files, and this machine is a little slow.

Havent had a chance to really test it yet, but it's running #NortonCommander without any issues. The root files are named a little different and there are some new commands, but I believe their goal is to be almost 100% backwards compatible. Native FAT32 support too.

It comes with a boat of additional packages, but I'm uncertain as to how I can install those with the fancy built-in package installer, without a CD-ROM or USB drive.

  5. @SecurityWriter did you noticed ghisler.com/accueil.htm that rebuilt a good close clone of NC, for a very long time ?

For “imaging” PCs, I’m using ActiveBackup for Business on synology’s DSM (no license needed) that can do snapshots and bare-metal restores, if that could help.

  8. What is your favorite Norton Commander clone for MS DOS, or other operating systems for that matter?
For DOS I absolutely swear by DOS Controller:
