“I’m in awe right now. Watching how slowly the sun rises up here, the moon still lighting up the sea and sky, and a powerful force of nature tossing us around underneath it all. Pinch me.” - Tina Tyler-Silverman

  2. Endangered #rightwhales could wait almost a decade for new #US protections
New protections for endangered right #whales in #Atlantic postponed for nearly a decade under a plan that cleared a key hurdle in Washington with support of fishing and lobster industries.
Environmentalists say this could spell end for the vanishing whales, which can drown after getting tangled up in fishing gear or being struck by boats. There are only about 380 #NorthAtlantic right whales left.

  9. The #NorthAtlantic’s ‘cold blob’ may signal a major current’s decline
The #AtlanticMeridionalOverturningCirculation may be near a #tippingpoint, researchers say
Prevailing wisdom has been that the patch was getting colder because less heat was coming in via #ocean currents — specifically, #AMOC. This current brings heat from the tropics northward toward Europe, shaping temperature and precipitation in Europe, North Africa and beyond.

  10. Mysterious 'cold blob' in the #Atlantic is a sign of the #GulfStream weakening — and that's bad news for the #USEastCoast

The Atlantic's enigmatic "cold blob" has once again been linked to a weakening of key ocean currents and a devastating climate tipping point.

    Story by Patrick Pester, 6/10/2026

"A mysterious "cold blob" in the Atlantic Ocean is a sign that key ocean currents are weakening, a new study has found, with potentially devastating long-term impacts on our #climate and #weather.

The cold blob, or #NorthAtlantic #WarmingHole, is an area south of Greenland and Iceland where average sea surface temperatures have actually been going down. Researchers have been working to understand the blob for years, given that it bucks the global trend of Earth getting warmer.

"The new research, published May 28 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, supports previous interpretations that the blob's existence points to a weakening of ocean currents known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (#AMOC). "

"Burning seashells to make quicklime once was a great tradition in the #NorthAtlantic region. In Millstone Park, Hyllestad (W-Norway), we have built two #limekilns, reviving old lime burning traditions, involving #craftspeople, volunteers and the public. Recently we burnt sea shells to make #LimePaint and #mortar! Read about the experiment in a new poster and web article."
