  1. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia is using Google (Gaza genocide collaborator) owned Youtube ("Holocaust-denier" & "white supremacist" trainer) to distribute the new "Sounds of Australia".

    Epstein Class captured.

But they don't list Twitter as a way to interact with them. 😀

(Back to the sewer) they do list Facebook (genocide promotion tool) and Instagram.

Excepting for promoting the use of genocide collaborators ...

Welcome to the nine new Sounds of Australia, including Jack Karlson's 'Succulent Chinese Meal' quote, the pedestrian crossing button sound, the ABC Kimberley broadcast of the Noonkanbah Station native title determination, the Reading Writing Hotline jingle, ‘You’ by Marcia Hines, 'Scar' by Missy Higgins and more.

  5. For folks working in #archives, #OpenContent, #editing, #libraries or #OpenData, you won't want to miss #WikiconAustralia, brought to you by @wm_au and hosted at the #NFSA.

Includes tutorials on #OpenRefine, and workshops on handling #Indigenous material in culturally appropriate ways (such as the CARE principles).

  7. Oh #arse.

I have double-booked myself for a #Greens meeting and also for the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band fillum.

I buggered up my calendar for last month's Greens meeting too, so regrettably, no Conway brothers for me.

    Poo.

Does anyone want my two #tickets? It is at 1pm, National Film and Sound Archive. (I imagine it is BYO rubber chicken / kazoo)

  9. Double French film weekend.

First time watch of the adorable Amelie (2001) and rewatch of the super cool Subway (1985).

Amelie was at the #NFSA but Subway was streamed.

  11. Super excited that Dr. Keir Winesmith is one of the keynotes for @everythingopen #EverythingOpen #EO2026 in Canberra in January.

The #NFSA are doing incredible things with #transcription of speech archives with their Bowerbird project, and their commitment to #AI and #ML practices is sector-leading. Interested in what he has to say.

  13. Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 3, Bruce Campbell's and Sam Raimi's greatest achievement - whatever you call it, is one of my favourite films.

I watched this for maybe the 20th time but this time at the #NFSA as part of the Science.Art.Film program. A half hour discussion followed the movie with two scientists from the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science - Dr Graham Walker, a public science educator, and Dr Anna-Sophie Jürgens, a Senior Lecturer in Science Communication, about the science and technology themes in the movie and more broadly.

Ended with a demonstration of his homemade, vacuum-cleaner-powered, marshmallow boomstick and a good thing too because a deadite showed up to terrorise everyone.

    Awesome 😎

  15. Last night I went to the #NFSA to see a Cult Classic screening of Silence of the Lambs with my daughter. Kicked off with an amazing, Lambs-themed, interpretative dance, it was a great night.

I spent a few hours this afternoon watching the jousting and checking out the #LARP culture at the Mediaeval Fair at Queanbeyan.

Now I'm out at Uni of Canberra to check out Melbourne MC, Seth Sentry. If his warm up act, Martian, is anything to go by, this will be great - the crowd are well into it!

  17. I saw Captain Blood (1935) for the first time at the movies today. It was a terrible print but it was still best watched on the big screen.

    Good, rousing stuff!

Errol Flynn, the lad from Tasmania whose name became a cliche for gusto had his debut, Warner Bros' made a spectacular switch from crime movies, and Basil Rathbone as a Frenchman!

The naval battles are fantastic with cannon-driven destruction and ship to ship boarding a'plenty.

  21. I saw Grease tonight at the NFSA theatre.

Watching one of the ultimate feel good movies with a couple of hundred other people is a top drawer community experience.

If fact, I'd go so far as to say that 'it's electrifying'.

It's one of my wife's top 3 films and we went with kids and their partners and had another cracker movie experience at the NFSA.

  27. If you're in #Canberra in mid-October, perhaps just after #Floriade, and you're interested in the role #AI plays in the future of libraries, museums and archives #GLAM, then you may like the Fantastic Futures conference #FF24, hosted by National Film and Sound Archive of Australia #NFSA on behalf of the #AI4ALL community of practice.

You might even know one of the keynotes 😎

  29. I went to the National Film and Sound Archive today and watched a free short film (6.5 min) consisting of show motion hi-def footage of native cockatoos on gigantic multi-screens rejected in a pool of water.

It was an incredible sensory experience.

Bravo to the artists and the NFSA.

  31. I went to see an Alien/Aliens double-feature at the National Film & Sound Archive last night with my 16 y.o daughter.

It's a wonderful theatre with a great 'vibe' - everything from the seating to the ushers lets you know that you are in a place that loves movies.

The movies themselves are excellent and, though I've seen Aliens many times over the years, I think I've only seen Alien a couple of times - and not for 20+ years.

My daughter loved them both, too, which made for a good discussion on the way home about which she preferred and why...

  33. I'm humbled and awed to be in the company of so many accomplished artists, researchers, practitioners, guardians, technologists and designers as part of the Fantastic Futures Conference #FF24 Key Speakers lineup - presented by #NFSA on behalf of the #AI4LAM community.

Peter-Lucas Jones, and the work of #TeHiku Media in preserving and protecting Indigenous speech data of #TeReo is an effort I have long admired. Associate Professor Kirsten Thorpe's work at the Jumbunna Institute at University of Technology Sydney also centres on data sovereignty for Indigenous data, from an archival perspective.

Eryk Salvaggio - @CyberneticForests - also an alum of the #ANU School of #Cybernetics, like myself does incredible work in interrogating social and cultural impacts of #AI, especially in #ComputerVision.

Kartini Ludwig's use of creativity at Kopi Su Studio to empower artists runs counter to the prevailing norm of scraping the internet to build #LLMs and #diffusion models.

And Associate Professor Sydney Shep's trans-disciplinary work in book history and print culture, as well as her practice as a letterpress printer and bookbinder, is a fascinating exploration of how our cultural histories shape our futures.

Together, we hope to convene conversations that help shape the future of #AI and #ML within the #GLAM sector.

Huge thank you to Keir Winesmith and @ingridbmason for the opportunity, and to Ashlinn H. who I know is doing incredible work behind the scenes.

  38. The Nowhere Men & Women: How India Abandoned 14 Crore Citizens on a Policy Paper

The government of India runs the world’s biggest food security scheme, which provides free ration to more than 80 crore people. The scheme has won Prime Minister Narendra Modi accolades. But what if we realise that there are over 14 crore people who have been omitted from the benefit of this scheme because the government has not counted Indian citizens in over a decade? Can its intransigence break the welfare structure of governance?

  40. Another cracker served up by the National Film & Sound Archive.

I saw this again last Friday at the NFSA this week with a scratchy but beautiful 35mm print in their gorgeous, art-deco theatre.

Privatised cops, escalating violence around the world and rampant, mindless consumerism all still resonate.

ED-209 looks a bit more stop-motion than I recall but I respect the effort. 👌

The cast is great, especially the bad guys: Ronnie Cox (Dick Jones) and Kurtwood Smith (Clarence Boddicker).

Deserves its cult-classic status even if it's lost its blockbuster shine.
