Did you know the Hudson River feels the ocean's tidal pull all the way to Troy, 153 miles north of New York Harbor? Michelle Young of Untapped New York explains why that makes ice on the Hudson flow both north and south — sometimes within the same day. A short but genuinely interesting read for anyone who has ever watched the river in winter.

of all the other info I'm collecting, sweet little gems like this are what I'm really doing research at YIVO for 😅 a Romanian klezmer bandleader from NY who I'd never heard of?🤓 this was an advertisement in a 1935 Chotiner Hospital relief banquet commemorative journal. not surprisingly, after a bit of digging on FamilySearch Frankfort was from Chotin (Khotyn) himself (was in Bessarabia Gub. Russia when he emigrated, today in Ukraine).

wonder if I can find traces of old musicians in this newly digitized collection. I know Baron de Hirsch's census counted a lot of Jewish musicians of the late 19th century but it's quite a mountain to look through here!

CW: historical suicide
oof, looking for articles about old musicians in New York Yiddish newspapers and came across this article in the Arbayter Tsaytung from 1892. A well-liked 40 year old musician, Abraham Manovich, asked to buy a razor in a barber shop, and went downstairs to the bathroom in the shop. the shop owner found him dead down there.😔

Author Daniel Pinchbeck's vivid memories of NYC, specifically Soho & lower Manhattan, in Purple Fashion's The NY issue (though his summation of present-day NYC is a little gloom-n-doom for me).
"[My mother] took me to lunch meetings with James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg, Grace Paley, and her close knit circle of woman literary agents and editors who quoted Virginia Woolf and Henry James..."

My latest #blog post, trying to sort and make a bit more sense of all the scores I got from the Library of Congress from #klezmer bandleader and recording artist Israel J. Hochman. I made a table trying to connect his music manuscripts to commercial #78rpm recordings by Hochman's various groups in the 1910s and 20s.

Exploring the 1872 masterpiece at #Rijksmuseum: "Portretten van vier leden van het Lagerhuis van de staat New York". The raw emotion in each expression, the exquisite detailing - anonymous yet so telling. How do you interpret their gaze?

a cool little fact at the intersection of #socialism and old New York #klezmer I found while going down the Weekly People rabbit hole. a painfully low-res newspaper digitization from Fulton History, reveals that Eva Elenkrig (sis of Abe) knew the violinist Jacob Gegna through the Socialist Labor Party in New York. This was from the December 23 1916 issue of Weekly People, the party newspaper.#NewYorkHistory #JewishHistory #SocialistHistory #DeLeon #Yiddish
