Elvira had this really weird rattle in all the menu button sounds. At first I thought it was the speaker or amp going bad but then...

OK, Internets, I need help solving a mystery. This 8-second video was taken from a balcony in San Diego County. There is a long, single-tone sound coming out of the valley from somewhere. My spectrum analyzer says it's at ~1.2kHz. It goes on for a minute or longer, and happens several times a day, never on a schedule we can discern. What the heck is this?

... #mysterysound is the one I have least good explanation for. And the force of impact was quite loud. It sounded like something strong and sizeable. If it was a person, they would have been pretty strong and large. To further rule out the idea of someone knocking on the door, my wife and I each took turns banging on the outside front door while listening from our respective sleeping spaces. The bangs we heard that morning and bangs on the front door were not remotely similar. So the sound...

...grass on that side of the house. QED... It was a small brick at the top of the chimney that had broken loose and fallen down the flue. Maybe. The only bit that doesn't add up is that the flue ends at the top of the fireplace and this sounded like it went down to the ground which is below the fireplace. Close enough. #mysterysound 4: This actually happened last week Sunday which is what sparked this post. My wife and I were sound asleep (we sleep on different floors due to differing sleep...

...wood. #mysterysound 3: This was maybe a year after mystery sound 2. I was up late (maybe 2:00 AM) and my wife and kid were asleep. I was in the living room working on a Linux project. Suddenly I heard what can only be described as a galloping scrabble that sounded like it moved from the top of the house to the ground in about three-four seconds. This was Winter. It was very much like the sound of, say, a large dog running around on the floor above you. Only it came from the wall and went...

...explanation for it. I chalked it up to something happening much farther away and the sound telegraphing through the soil to shake the foundation of the house and make it sound closer. #mysterysound 2: My wife and I were sitting in the living room (this is maybe our third or fourth year in the house) and talking on the couch. Possibly around 9:00/10:00 PM. There is a large front porch on the house. While we spoke there was a very loud sound that resembled someone dropping a very heavy box...
