So, I created a #Kbin “Magazine” for the #Philippines over at #ReadItBuzz.
I don't know if it will be successful or not. But I want to experiment and learn more about the software, and the best way to do that is to actually use it. (And maybe suggest a feature or two later on.)
You can follow **/m/pilipinas** by searching on your instance either of these:
- https://readit.buzz/m/pilipinas
- @pilipinasThe “microblog” tab of the Philippines Magazine will capture posts with these tags/keywords: #Philippines #Filipino #Pilipinas #Filipinas #Pilipino #Philippine #Pinoy #Noypi #Filipinos #Pilipinos
Those are the usual tags used by Filipinos and foreigners. The microblog section of the magazine should be able to capture those posts that reaches the https://readit.buzz instance.

I am curious how #Tumblr will handle accounts with custom domains, once they connect to the #fediverse network.
Will they let us use our custom domains? Or just a generic @[email protected]?
Like in my case, will it be:

I wonder which will be the next big platform to launch #AcitivityPub support?
#Flickr? #Tumblr? #Meta / #Instagram?
If Tumblr releases their fediverse support, that's a lot of users and content.
Flickr will also add a lot of photo/image content.
Instagram… it will add a lot of photo/image content and users from a lot of countries who are into #AsianPop like #Jpop and #Kpop, as well as, #AsianDrama like #Kdrama, #Jdrama, and #Cdrama. Why? #Fandoms and East Asian celebrities are using Instagram big time more than they use #Twitter or #Facebook.

@[email protected] You can follow, post, and reply to Lemmy “communities” with any #fediverse software.
You just have to find the #Lemmy community you want to follow, which is currently done by visiting different Lemmy instances and browsing their communities (no need to create an account).
For example, I am following, posting, and replying to content in the @[email protected] Lemmy community. (I added a hyphen to avoid tagging it, since this is off-topic to the community.)
I hope it helps!

#Hubzilla and #Streams have #AccountPortability or #NomadicIdentity for years now (which is what #BlueSky is trying to own as “first”).
You can import your content from #Mastodon to #Calckey (the devs are also looking into making it even better).
#Pixelfed recently launched content import from #Instagram.
If I am not mistaken, there are other on-going discussions from key players into making account portability an integral part of #ActivityPub. (Or something like that.)

I think one area we need to start re-shaping is how to explain things about the fediverse.
Example, we say:
* Pixelfed is “Instagram-like”
* Mastodon is “Tweetdeck-like” or “Twitter-like”
* Friendica and Hubzilla as “Facebook-like”
* BookWyrm as “Goodreads-like”
* PeerTube as “YouTube-like”By the way, I'm one of those who explain it this way. ^_~
The way I see it is we are anchoring these different fediverse services to those silo services, when we shouldn't. This, I assume, leads to unfair expectations against the fediverse software.
When Instagram first showed up, I don't recall we called it “Flickr-like”. Or, when Facebook launched, I don't recall it was ever referenced as “Friendster-like” or “MySpace-like”. We treated them as-is, a new service. The lack of an anchor prevented us from having a set of expectations, instead we explored these new services.
However, let's also admit that it makes it easier to explain by using existing services. So, the question is this:
What's the best way to explain Instagram-like, Twitter-like, Facebook-like, and so on, without using more tech words like “microblogging”, “macroblogging“, etc.?
Share your ideas in this thread. Maybe, just maybe, by re-anchoring things to the fediverse, things can be better here and there. It won't be perfect, but it should at least make some difference, right?

@choyer If you prefer a pure-Mastodon UI/UX then there is c.im with a 5000-character limit.
There is also c.wtf with the same limit but is running on #Rebased, a fork of #Pleroma.
Or, you can use #WriteFreely or #Plume, fediverse software designed for long form writing.
There are also #Hubzilla #Streams and #Socialhome with unlimited characters.
Those are what I can remember, I'm sure I've forgotten one or two.
I hope you find your new home for long writeups!

@MudMan @apparentlymart @[email protected] @atomicpoet @pablowapsi
I recently started using #MycelialNetwork myself. (It started from this discussion thread: https://calckey.social/clips/9e0jyttriv )
My usage today is more broader than was originally discussed.
Mycelium (s.) is a network of fungal threads. So, many mycelium, mycelial, is a network of network of fungal threads (did that make sense?)
If we use it in the federated/federation sense, the Mycelial Network is the following:
1. Mycelium #Fediverse
2. Mycelium #XMPP / #Jabber
3. Mycelium #Matrix
4. Mycelium #ATPAnd in between them are bridges (or portals?) which allows cross communication. (Hopefully we get one for ATP.)
It can also cover what has been discussed on this thread like: eMail and IRC.
Or, #SocialWeb is more than enough to describe it all together?

There's nothing inherently wrong with mastodon.social, or with any of the other instances controlled by Eugen / Gargron.
But one of the "hidden" strengths of the #Fediverse is that it's spread out. It's distributed. If one server is knocked offline or bought out, the rest of the fediverse keeps on a keepin' on. All servers are connected. It's like a #MycelialNetwork
Just find yourself a new home and migrate your account. You'll bring all of your followers, even leave a forwarding address.

All these talk about #BlueSky and complaints about #Mastodon this, #ActivityPub that, #Fediverse this, and #Decentralisation that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from #Jollibee.
#AccountPortability (#NomadicIdentity)? Check out #Hubzilla and #Streams (the latter is in the #PublicDomain). #QuotePosts / #QuoteReplies? There is #Calckey, #Akkoma, Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a #Twitter-like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or #Rebased. What else?
The problem stems from the fediverse ending up **unofficially** represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.
What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.
No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.
Also, no one is saying #ATP shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.
Here's a #challenge: Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.
Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

CW: Universe and Fediverse … an attempt to put some context to how big it is
In #astronomy, the phrase “observable universe” came into use to describe what we can see/observe from our vantage point.
The fediverse has grown so big since its humble beginnings in 2008. My guess is, we are only seeing 0.5% of what it is today. That is your “observable fediverse”, relative from your account.
1. The instances your instance are aware of.
2. The remote users your local instance natives are replying/boosting.
3. The remote users you, yourself is following.
4. And the remote users being boosted/replied to by the remote users you are following.Those are the only ones in your #ObservableFediverse. My observable fediverse is different from your observable fediverse. I am seeing content you are not seeing, and vice versa.
Just like how improving our technologies help us expand our #ObservableUniverse. We need to grow our network to expand our relative observable fediverse.
