    Auf der im August 1907 gestarteten Nimrod-Expedition, einer vom Briten Ernest Shackleton geleiteten Antarktisexpeditionen, bestieg eine Gruppe den 3794 m hohen Mount Erebus, den südlichsten aktiven Vulkan der Erde, und erreichte nach einem sechstägigen Aufstieg den Gipfel.
