TL;DW: When they released the original #DonkeyKong, Nintendo faced an intense lawsuit over whether it infringed on the #KingKong IP. They won, but were traumatised, and became incredibly wary over their copyrights.
Their IPs are incredibly valuable, but they don't have pockets deep enough for lots of legal battles, so they aggressively nip piracy in the bud.
