    ...they would *exchange* (=lend) there copies of #papyri to other #libraries to be copied and thus be accessible to local #scolars.

    If I remember correctly, and of course there is the possibility of variation between countries, this principle was continued by #monastries with books for hundreds of years.
    (#Monchs used to be the only ones to be able to read and write, apart from some very few #aristocrats.)
