  1. Folded a rhombic dodecahedron following @foldworks 's paper/workshop from Bridges 2024. It bends and can even bounce a little! ✨

    archive.bridgesmathart.org/202

    Made from four A4 half-sheets.

Folding and assembling all 24 modules took... about 3.5 hours. 😅 Good way to check off a few presentations from the to-watch list! 😁

  2. "Tepeyac", a new modular origami mandala I designed two days ago to have something new to teach at the upcoming origami convention in Mexico City. #mandala #origamimandala #modularorigami

  3. This is why QRSTUVWXZ Stars didn’t work so well: the units should meet at the centre but there’s a finger-sized gap 😞

  4. Two versions of XYZ Stars. The larger model is folded from isosceles right-angled triangles; the smaller from 2:1 rectangles. Both were made from squares of the same size. @origami

  5. Planar modular origami mania from 2- to 9-pointed stars.

Yes, I did make the 90-unit QRSTUVWXZ Stars (top left) but it didn’t work as well as I wanted so I made XYZ Stars (centre) to complete the collection.

  6. Jitterbug, one of my best-known origami creations.

    Geogebra file: geogebra.org/m/wsxthyaz
    Origami instructions: foldworks.net/wp-content/uploa

I first came across Buckminster Fuller’s Jitterbug in Amy C. Edmondson’s A Fuller Explanation (1987).

As I didn’t have dowels and four-way rubber connectors, I made several cuboctahedra that worked as Jitterbugs but were not very reversible. Some were from paper and others from drinking straws and elastic thread. This modular origami version is the most recent version.

  7. Here’s the other side, part- and fully-assembled.

I have an idea for RSTUVWXYZ Stars (72 units, nine intersecting eight-pointed stars) which will take some time. Even though it has more units, it has easier geometry than STUVWXYZ Stars (56 units, eight intersecting seven-pointed stars).

Meenakshi Mukerji called these ‘unconventional polyhedra’ 😆

  8. A few different folds adapts the unit for TUVWXYZ Stars, a modular origami model of seven intersecting six-pointed stars.

Made from seven sheets of A4 colour paper, each cut into six 1:√3 rectangles, fold and joined without glue.

How can there be 42 units? See Meenakshi Mukerji’s guide to planar modulars at origamee.net/diagrams/planars (which I’ve only just found, after all these years)

  9. @johncarlosbaez Did you mean rhombuses instead of rectangles? The final model has three diamonds (rhombus that is two equilateral triangles).

XYZ Diamonds belongs to a genre of modular origami called Planar Modulars britishorigami.org/publication

  10. A different approach yields XYZ Diamonds. This unit differs from the two models by late Francis Ow (one has instructions at owrigami.com/show_diagram.php?, check out the site for other great origami)

The model uses the inherent geometry of 1:√3 rectangles (but could be folded from other rectangles). Much easier to fold and assemble than the other models 😄

  11. Some different folds makes this 30-unit star, somewhere between UVWXYZ Stars by the late Meenakshi Mukerji and my Blintz Icosidodecahedron. Original instruction for the latter at web.archive.org/web/2010122014

A bit of a struggle to finish, I think the paper was too small and thick (10 cm memo cube paper). I had to use some tools to help tuck the flaps near the end of assembly.

  12. XYZ Rhombic, modular @origami stars made with paper from New Zealand and South Korea

Concise instructions woodenbooks.com/index.php#!ORI (bottom of page 41)

For your first attempt, use six 7.5 by 15 cm (3 by 6 inch) rectangles in three colours. Make sure each unit is identical or the assembly won’t work. Experienced folders can use 37.5 by 75 mm (1.5 by 3 inch) rectangles.

  13. Jitterbug, a modular action model by @foldworks

Folded with 12 squares of Tant paper (15×15 cm).

You can find the diagram, and some others, on his website:
    foldworks.net/

It's very fun to fold and manipulate!

Thank you Tung Ken Lam for sharing your work!

  14. Two modular origami cubes made from 1:√2 rectangles and squares (Canoe Unit 90° by me).

  15. Three modular origami octahedra made from three different kinds of rectangles (Canoe Unit 60° by me).
From left to right, the rectangles are 1:√2, square and 2:√3.

  16. "Mater Amabilis" modular origami mandala. Diagrammed in my book "Magnificent Origami Mandalas", available on Amazon. #modularorigami #origami #morigami #mandala #origamimandala

  17. "Gloucestershire Old Spots" modular origami mandala, designed and folded by me today. This one is easy to fold but I really like the result. Working on the sequel to my new book Magnificent Origami Mandalas. #morigami #origami #mandala #origamimandala #modularorigami

  18. A new modular origami mandala, designed and folded by me. I plan to include it in my next book, assuming I sell enough of my first book, Magnificent Origami Mandalas (available on Amazon) #morigami #origami #origamimandala #modularorigami
