The Poughkeepsie Tapes and When the Screaming Starts are two mockumentaries that weaponize “truth” aesthetics while failing to provide psychological depth, ethical clarity, or meaningful insight into violence. One film is technically brilliant but spiritually hollow.

THE TRUTH ist das erste Mockumentary-Tanzstück des Choreografie-Duos KIESECKER | HOESS. Seit 2019 arbeiten Sarah Kiesecker und Dominik Hoess an einer gleichberechtigten, demokratischen Arbeitsweise – ihre choreografischen Prozesse sind geprägt von intensivem Austausch, physischer Präzision und performativer Neugier. Gemeinsam entwickeln sie eine Bewegungssprache, bei der Präzision und Synchronität im Fokus stehen. Partnering und akrobatische Elemente sind ebenso Teil der gemeinsamen Arbeit, wie Unisonos und performative Elemente.
THE TRUTH erkundet Schnittstellen von Choreografie, Dokumentation & Authentizität. Das Publikum erlebt choreografische Sequenzen, jedoch auch filmische Szenen, die auf die Rückwand projiziert werden und Einblicke in den Entstehungsprozess geben.
Inspiration für den anvisierten Charakter des Stückes sind erfolgreiche Mockumentary-Serien wie „The Office“ oder „die Discounter“. Die Settings dieser Serien sind prekär und fantasielos. Spannung entsteht durch soziale Verwerfungen, die sich von Folge zu Folge verdichten. Die stark verschobene Selbstansicht der Hauptcharaktere wird ironisch zur Schau gestellt. In Interviews prahlen sie mit Kompetenzen, die sie in anderen Szenen offensichtlich überhaupt nicht erfüllen. Zentrale Themen sind der Dunning-Kruger-Effekt (krasse Selbstüberschätzung) vs. Impostor-Syndrom (Selbstzweifel) – beides Phänomene, die sich im Tanzbereich auffällig zeigen. Choreografische Arbeit als hochkomplexes (fachlich, handwerklich, künstlerisch & soziales) Aufgabenfeld stellt hohe Anforderungen an Resilienz & Selbstwirksamkeit der Beteiligten. KH verfolgen die Annahme, dass eine Offenlegung des Kreationsprozesses für das Publikum eine spannende Gemengelage offenbart.
Die Performenden stellen sich die Frage nach „der Wahrheit“ – künstlerisch, persönlich, gesellschaftlich, immer mit einer Portion Selbstironie. Intime Probenprozesse werden als kondensiertes Feld sozialer Interaktion elementarer Teil des Endprodukts. Sie verweben sich mit fiktionalen Narrativen. Dabei stellt sich die Frage: Was ist inszeniert, was echt? Aufgrund des reißerischen Titels vermutet man vielleicht einen Skandal, der eine alternative Wahrheit ans Licht bringt.
Die Präsenz eines „Outside Eye“ spielt eine große Rolle – bei Proben die Kamera, bei der Performance das Publikum. Die Kamera dokumentiert, beeinflusst, beschränkt, wird selbst zum Akteur. Dabei entwickelt sich eine bisweilen bewertende Präsenz. Die Kluft zwischen dem, was in Proben passiert und den dazugehörigen Statements der Choreograf*innen werden von dieser verborgenen Instanz hinterfragt. Das Outside Eye versucht, durch unangenehme Fragen in Interviewszenen, der Wahrheit auf die Schliche zu kommen.
Die Inszenierung reflektiert die wechselseitige Durchdringung von Leben und Kunst. Ironie und Ernsthaftigkeit stehen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander. Ziel ist keine bloße Bühnenästhetik, sondern eine kritische Reflexion über Rollen, Erwartungen und Konflikte innerhalb von künstlerischen Teams.

My wife and I just watched Listers, and it was great. We're just the right level of birder for this comedic documentary — we like watching birds and know quite a few, but we would never go through the inconvenience of a "big year." This film was both highly entertaining and had lots of lovely footage of birds as well.
