It's companies like #DEC were able to turn out #minicomputers that shattered the dominance of #mainframes. But it's also why DEC was brought so low that a PC company, #Compaq - was able to buy it for pennies on the dollar.

That fact is now made famous by "Hidden Figures". "Then we had these computers with 'drum memory' which were way faster!" I first read about the details of those in "The Supermen" by Charles J. Murray on the history of supercomputing. I assumed those were relegated to the 1950s. Turns out Dave at Usagi Electric has restored a drum-memory mini-computer made by Litton that dates from the early 1970s.
