Did you know the first time a weather forecaster appeared on TV in front of a map was in 1954? This stamp features Barbara Edwards who, 20 years later, became the first woman to present the weather on BBC.

We began working with radar imagery and computers in the 1950s and produced the first operational computer forecast in 1965.
Today radar imagery provides highly detailed observations and data which we use in weather forecasting.

The D-Day forecast is widely considered to be the most important forecast we've ever done.
In a period of unsettled weather, key observations helped to identify a crucial break in the weather which enabled the invasion to go ahead on 6 June 1944

Marine buoys collect data for the shipping forecast, a national icon 🇬🇧 Originating from FitzRoy's gale warning service, it continues to save lives at sea and has become part of our cultural history, featuring in everything from popular songs to art

This storm barometer was designed by our founder Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy, after the Royal Charter Gale 1859, to help fishermen prepare for bad weather. He also created the 1st national gale warning system for ships around the GB coast

This is pharmacist & amateur meteorologist Luke Howard who first named clouds in 1803. He used Latin terms to describe the 3 main types – stratus for ‘layer’, cumulus for ‘heaped’ & cirrus for ‘lock or tuft of hair'.
