Our instance runs on @netcup's VPS 3000 ARM G11, i.e. a 12 core KVM VM on Neoverse-N1 #ARM64 server hardware.

We don't have a lot of users yet. However, when users with >1K followers moved to our server, the #sidekiq queue did grow (running the default install of Mastodon, no Docker).

So we used the opportunity to do the configuration tuning that had worked well when some of us scaled an AMD64-based Mastodon instance previously: create several sidekiq processes by copying and adapting a systemd service file – roughly as detailed by @leah here: https://leah.is/posts/scaling-the-mastodon/
This sped up sidekiq enormously – as it had done earlier on different hardware.

To sum up, we highly recommend ARM hardware for running Mastodon instances because it eats less energy and performs well enough.

Has anyone solved the upload pictures being to big yet? Beamship has a piece of code to use a Linux program to convert it to a smaller one but we don't know how to plug it in. If someone would like to help, maybe we can shoot on the fly 😜

I tried to block another domain from federate on my instance to see how it works.

Ran into an issue - the full-text service on this Mastodon website crashed a little under a day after I deployed it, so full-text search simply stopped working.

ElasticSearch takes a lot of memory, close to 1.6GB, which is fine, I can spare that much. I logged in today to see if it had increased, and saw my RAM at half-capacity, which immediately caused alarm. Dunno why it crashed, too, the logs say nothing.

Mastodon users, you will see a delay in your website sending your posts to other servers if your local people use ntfy.sh to subscribe to notifications. I suggest you heavily discourage anyone who uses them.

Admins, if you see your sidekiq queues clogged up as above, try the following on your server.
1. Run Rails console:- `RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails c`
2. Execute the code here: `https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/26115#issuecomment-1646569279`

Need some help from fellow mastodon admins - ever since the latest 4.1.5 update, all remote post timestamps have been broken on this instance. Anytime we fetch messages it shows as having been posted around 5-19 hours ago (and i think that gap is increasing slowly over the past three days.)

I've restarted all my processes but to no avail. Any tips? Is this a known bug? I can't see it as a logged issue in the mastodon repo.

It looks like I finally managed to resolve this by increasing postgres’ max_connections setting, together with introducing the DB_POOL setting in my Mastodon enviroment:

I have no idea why this was suddenly required, when Mastodon was running just fine previously, but it does seem to have resolved it.

Life of a #sysadmin - #mastadmin. Tweaking some things about my instance while updating servers in an old environment that i'm trying to slowly migrate away from at work. I really do love what I do and when people ask, I can't really imagine a life outside of what I do every day.

@nova I feel like if anyone would know, it's you. Is there any project to collect and distribute frequently blocked/defederated instances and server blocked users? Basically the way you could subscribe to public block lists in the olden days of twitter

Checking my media usage I'm seeing this

Avatars: 2.02 GB (76.5 KB local)
Headers: 4.67 GB (98.7 KB local)

I tried tootctl media remove but that does not seem to remove the "non-local" attachments etc.

Am I missing something here?

@tfiebig Thanks! I think I've found a few things...

* I did not set up Elastisearch. I'm on a cheap instance, don't want to hammer it. Once I get a few more onboarded we'll see.

* Because of federated, we just have to rely on trending hashtags, or manually go to other servers (list at https://joinmastodon.org/servers) to search for content

* Trying to get 'relay' setup with other servers... gonna be a key element if people don't want to be silo'ed.

Who would be interested in me building the following server. If I get 100 yes votes or more I will build it.

Cursed Amnesia servers

1) All users must behave and present themselves is a non-identifiable way

2) any user reliably identified will be suspended from the user, they can always open another account

3) Server will change its URL once a day, currently registered users will get an email of the new address

4) when the address changes all handles of users are automatically randomized. Login will remain the same but it will appear as a fresh new account with no posts or followers. The old account will still remain as will your posts.
