Eager for life, I went away,
and while I wasn't looking you got old. Got, not grew: I saw no ageing,
only Age upon you, like a spider's web:
a role embraced, accepted.Unrehearsed the dialogue
of now and anymore and can't:
poor legacies of failed intent,
of dreams and passions still unspent, dead, in a grey cocoon.Where went your rage to live?

One of my favourite poems by my mother.
ALAS*
Long dead, and buried in another town,
my mother hasn't finished with me yet.
Distressed, I pass a mirror and her face;
her voice, resigned, comes ragged from my throat,
and in my heart, her anger smolders still
amid the ashes of residual guilt,
which may disperse when my death us do part.
Then shall forgiven and forgiving meet again,

Out of curiosity I checked out the Goodreads review of my mother's first book of poetry* "Vapour Trails", published in 2000 just before her death. I was pleased to see such positive comments on it.
Readers of Louise Penny's books will be familiar with some lines from the book as they are given to the character poet Ruth Zardo.

It has been reprinted (2024) and is being sold from Brome Lake Books in Canada. I have several copies here and tried to offer them to local libraries but there was so much red tape for them to be able to accept such a donation that I gave up trying.
*Her second book "After it is Over" was published posthumously.
