  1. In Reykjavik, Mars will disappear behind the Moon at 18h 30m UTC (in twilight) and reappear at 19h 31m UTC.

In Tromsø, Mars will disappear behind the Moon at 18h 58m UTC, 19:58 CET, and reappear at 19h 54m UTC, 20:54 CET.

  2. Popular astronomy: Mars will appear very close to the Moon in the sky tonight.

For me in Wales on the western edge of Europe, they will be closest around 18h 46m UTC about 20 arcmin apart (centre to centre), with Mars 4 arcmin from the lunar limb.

The Moon will occult (pass in front of) Mars as seen from some places further north.

The Moon will partly cover Mars from Oslo, around 19h 10m UTC, 20:10 CET.

  3. For example, in Washington DC, the Moon will occult (pass in front of) Mars between 02h 16m UTC (21:16 local time) and 03h 30m UTC (22:30 local time).

  4. Popular astronomy: the Moon and the planet Mars will appear very close together tomorrow night (Monday evening/Tuesday morning). For me, in Britain, they will appear closest around 04h 30m UTC about 0.5 deg apart (centre to centre).

Some locations will experience an occultation, when the Moon passes directly in front of Mars. This will happen just hours after the Moon is full.

  5. I got clouded out from the Mars/Moon occultation, but the Geminids are coming up next for cold-weather observing. 🥶

  6. We missed the #MarsOccultation. Clouds broke up a bit after the event, and I took a few photos.

  7. -9C & morning chores didn't give room for a thorough observation, but seeing this now was really cool. #MarsOccultation

  8. Sometimes i bloody well hate nature! Virtually clouded out for #MarsOccultation this frosty morning, desperately playing with scope settings. Just caught it in binoculars but well… 😩 #astro

  9. This is Mars just before it passed behind the Moon tonight.

Super challenging shooting through a very brief thin spot in high altitude clouds.

  10. Well, clouds were gathering around sunset and at this point I can't even see the Moon! I thought this was supposed to be a desert…

  11. ^^ Of course, the #moon is very bright, which will make seeing #Mars slightly challenging (even though Mars is bright, too) — binoculars should help. Good luck! (#MarsOccultation)

  12. Things are looking good for the #MarsOccultation - the sky is beautifully clear.

(I've probably just jinxed it there for everybody. Sorry!)

  13. So Mars will disappear behind the Moon at the bright limb of the Moon, and will reappear on the other side also at a bright limb. Occultations normally involve disappearance at a bright or dark limb, and reappearance is at the other.

The event might be a bit difficult to view with the naked eye because the Moon is so bright, but binoculars or a small telescope should show it well.

  14. For me at the northwesternmost point in Wales, the occultation will take place in the early hours of the morning. Disappearance will be at December 8d 04h 55m UTC (GMT). Reappearance will be at 05h 56m UTC. The times vary with location.

Coincidentally, Mars will reach opposition within an hour of the occultation: it will reach the point directly opposite the Sun in the sky. So the Moon will also be opposite the Sun in the sky. Full moon is at 04h 08m UTC.

  15. Popular astronomy: an interesting event will take place tomorrow night, an occultation of Mars. The Moon will occult (pass in front of) the planet Mars as seen from most of Europe and North America.
