  1. As a reader, I'm currently at a phase where I just can't like any book I read. I tried reading the first #Malazan book, The Futurological Congress and The Lost Man, but nope. They feel either too long, too boring or simply unintelligible. I think this is a side effect of reading a couple of *really* good books last month (The stand and The Martian Chronicles). I wanna invest myself in a fantastic book once again. Gonna try Norstrilia by Cordwainer Smith next.

  2. A ver, aquí no doy por saco como en X #malazan #malaz #LosCaídos ... pero hoy no me puedo resistir. Caerá relectura algún día #friki

  3. Ordered the first two #Malazan books - looking forward to diving into something heavy (as I've read).😅 #reading #fantasy

  4. NEW EPISODE: Jim brings his review today of Dancer's Lament, book 1 of Esslemont's Path to Ascendency series. Is this return to the world of Malazan worthy? Listen to find out. Spoiler-lite, with a full spoil section at the end! #Malazan #Fantasy youtu.be/QFPg0S5adKg

  5. Finished Dancer’s Lament. Unbelievable, how good this book is. Having read everything by Esslemont and Erikson up to this point, this novel is incredibly satisfying and fun. Loved every minute of it. Best Esslemont book yet. #Malazan #fantasy

  6. I’ve returned to Malazan content, this time with book 1 of Esslemont’s Path to Ascendency, Dancer’s Lament. 40% in already, and INCREDIBLE. Ties into so much of what I’ve already read, including the first two Kharkanas Trilogy books. Yes, I DO need more #Malazan! #fantasy

  7. NEW EPISODE: My Malazan/Erikson journey continues, as I review today Fall of Light, Book 2 of The Kharkanas Trilogy. Good, but not all I was hoping for. Come see what I mean! #SFF #fantasy #malazan #Kharkanas #BookReview youtu.be/JXVoeZ9pCxA

  8. Finished Fall of Light, Kharkanas Trilogy 2. Oh, that finish! Wow. Erikson knows how bring it home! A moving narrative. This series has made MBotF have so much more depth for me. Now if he'll just finish book 3 at some point... #Malazan #Kharkanas #fantasy

  9. Fall of Light, 95%: Oh, this story is turning even more tragic than it was. I have to admit, I've found this one a bit longer than necessary - it has dragged, at times - but the culmination of all that has occurred is hitting home! #Malazan #fantasy

  10. A few days from now my wife & I will be on our annual cruise vacation. Makes me think nostalgically of Malazan, as 2 years ago at this time I was reading Gardens of the Moon, loaded 3 more books just in case, and got off the cruise STILL reading Gardens of the Moon. LOL #Malazan

  11. NEW EPISODE: Jim is finally ready to review Forge of Darkness, Steven Erikson's 1st book in his Kharkanas Trilogy. Spoiler-lite as usual, but stick around to the end for a full spoil section if you've read it! #Malazan #Kharkanas #fantasy #BookReview youtu.be/UdnO0XbxuQE

  12. Fall of Light, 20%: I hate to say it, but I'm not enjoying this one nearly as much as the previous, Forge of Darkness. Many have been telling me how much more incredible THIS one is, but I'm not feeling it. Finding my attention wander! Pushing on. #Malazan #Fantasy

  13. Now reading Fall of Light, book 2 of the (so far) incredible Kharkanas Trilogy by Steven Erikson, a WAY BACK prequel trilogy to Malazan Book of the Fallen. Book 3 isn't yet out, so I'll have to wait once I finish this one. 😢 #Malazan #Fantasy #Kharkanas

  14. NEW EPISODE: Malazan withdrawal. That's the feeling for many once they finish Malazan Book of the Fallen. Here's the cure, 10 suggestions for worthy reading adventures once you take Erikson's incredible epic fantasy. #Malazan #fantasy #EpicFantasy #SFF youtu.be/Jx3u2zS_a7I

  15. Finished Forge of Darkness, Kharakas Trilogy Bk 1. That... was... incredible! It only works if you've read Malazan Book of the Fallen & Novels of the Malazan Empire — but I have! So incredible & powerful, this backstory drama. I look forward to doing a review! #Malazan #fantasy

  16. CW: Mild spoilers for Malazan Empire novel Orb Sceptre Throne, maybe

While Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen novels have been pretty consistently enjoyable for me, Esslemont's Novels of the Malazan Empire have been perhaps slightly more hit or miss. But I've gotta say I can hardly put down Orb Sceptre Throne so far—perhaps in part because it starts out with such similar plot beats to an M.R. James story (earnest scholar accidentally unearths an eldritch evil). Great stuff.

    #Bookstodon #Malazan

  17. Forge of Darkness, 73%: This book... Wow. So dark, in what it establishes for the future of this series, and what is to come. The Tiste... they so screw themselves! #Malazan #epicfantasy

  18. Forge of Darkness, 21%: The continuing revelations behind the history of the Tiste, the Jaghut, the Azath, the Imass, and the various players of all these - it's so delicious! Erikson had to have a TON of fun writing this. #Malazan #Fantasy

  19. Just a bit into Forge of Darkness (4%), & already so good to be here. Seeing characters where I pretty much know the end of their story, now SO much earlier in their lives, and it's fantastic. Plus, the writing. THE WRITING! Erikson is a pleasure to read. #Malazan #fantasy

  20. One more fun post from my year in Goodreads statistics. And such a worthy read! #Malazan #GoodreadsYearinBooks #SFF

  21. I haven't read all of #GlenCook's #BlackCompany #books by a long shot, but I found the first storyline in particular to be groundbreaking #darkfantasy. For me, the #Bridgeburners were just a lousy copy, so I cancelled the overhyped #Malazan series for this reason, among others. #booksky #fantasy

  25. Yay!
"Crone" is back on *Toll the Hounds*!
    Book 8, I think, of #stevenerikson 's #Malazan series.

  26. As I'm reading through *The Bonehunters*, halfway through #stevenerikson 's #Malazan books, I found that pausing every now and then, and scanning malazan.fandom.com/wiki/Malaza for reference on whichever character or place dominated a passage I just read, gives me additional enjoyment. It also helps me keep events and characters straight in my head.

  27. A little past a third of the way into #TheBonehunters with #klausschulze 's *Deus Arrakis* blasting in my living room
-perfect soundtrack for what's happening in the story!-
and my heart is racing. Had to actually put the book down for a moment and take a breath.
    Man!
    That #StevenErikson kid can write!

  32. #StevenErikson's word for the day:

    widdershins

I just started *The Bonehunters* and of course within a few pages I had to reach for the dictionary.

    Good times.

  33. An unexpected side-effect as I read through the last couple of hundred pages of *Midnight Tides*, is that I have the urge to pay off and destroy all my credit cards.
    Immediately.

  34. ... and right after a scene so intense it made both my and my cat's hair stand up, the pace changes to the comedic duo of Bugg and Tehol.

#stevenerikson not only writes beautifully, he plans things out like a Master.

    #Malazan #bookstodon

  35. #stevenerikson 's *Midnight Tides*, the 5th book of the #Malazan "fallen" series, is a bit of a slow starter.
But about a third of the way in, holy shit! It felt like a firecracker went off in my brain.

  36. Coming up at Noon Central Time today, we're returning to Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, looking at books three and four (Memories of Ice and House of Chains). We start with a video premiere and live chat, followed by videoconferencing on Zoom

  37. CW: Huge Malazan spoiler - 1st 3 books, esp. Memories of Ice.

The death of Whiskeyjack and the resulting grief as felt by different characters is beautifully done.

It's just a stupid fantasy series, right? But fuck me if all this honor and friendship shit doesn't hit hard... Along with the Itkovian arc, the last hundred or so pages of #memoriesofice can be emotionally overwhelming.

  41. Many #fantasybooks authors write great, epic battle scenes.
But #stevenerikson in my opinion stands out.

His talent is to communicate so much empathy and investment in the characters, that by the time a battle starts you are so emotionally engaged that you hear what the characters hear, taste and feel what they do.

  42. Coming today at Noon Central, session 76 of Worlds of Speculative Fiction. We're looking at the first two books of Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series. Starts with video premiere and live chat, followed by Zoom videoconferencing!

  43. I mean, Coltaine 's last stand - Holy FUCK.

I know it's fiction, but it got me all emotional and shit, more so the second time around reading it.

  44. It's my second read-through of #StevenErikson's #Malazan books.

They are so much more enjoyable this time around! I can enjoy the language and the plot points without the manic "wait, what the fuck, who was that, what is she " pauses of the first time.

About a third of the way through *Deadhouse Gates*, when the ship appears (enough said, no spoilers if you haven't read it), I got actual physical goosebumps while reading through.

    Great stuff!

  45. The proper way to read #StevenErikson's #Malazan books is SLOWLY.
Take your time, enjoy the writing, visualize this shit. And if your mind wanders, stop. Put the book down, refocus, pick it up.

My second read-through of *Gardens Of The Moon* is absolutely magical.

  46. So I "discovered" #DimmuBorgir recently, and I just really really dig the whole "Huge-Symphonic-Death-and-Hell-and-BGRHAAAAAH" thing that they have going.

As I'm back on reading #StevenErikson's #Malazan books now, the Black/Death Metal lads are a wonderful accompaniment.

I am but a simple man.
