  1. I came across tubist Ray Draper recently when hearing recordings by Jackie McLean and Max Roach. This is his highly enjoyable 1957 debut as a leader. A year later he would also record with John Coltrane.

  2. Mal Waldron & Terumasa Hino - Reminiscent Suite

This 1973 album used to be impossible to find, but BBE re-released it last year, with translated liner notes & a nice pressing.

Waldron was on tour in Japan and jumped into the studio with some top-flight Japanese artists, including Terumasa on trumpet, his brother Motohiko on drums, Takao Uematsu (tenor), Isao Suzuki (bass), and Yuhji Imamura (percussion).

Edging up to free jazz, but still structured.

  3. Mal Waldron - The Quest

Seemed an appropriate follow-on to Dialogue, as this is in a similar vein.

Waldron (piano) is the band leader here (although this has also come out as an Eric Dolphy release, likely due to comparative popularity at the time), with Dolphy (alto sax, clarinet), Booker Ervin (tenor sax), Ron Carter (cello), Joe Benjamin (bass), and Charlie Persip (drums).
