If you are a @societyofauthors member (like I am), and you were there to post about #MetaBookThieves (as I was), and you want to #MakeItFair and make Meta #DoTheWriteThing (as I absolutely do), give giovanh's essay a read.

    > What’s being (rightfully!) objected to is a new kind of *labor issue.*

    > Corporations unfairly competing with workers: labor issue. Use of new technology to displace the workers who enabled it: labor issue.

  17. periódicos ingleses se unen para presentar la misma portada alertando sobre deber de imponer regulaciones a la IA

Los contenidos que se alimentan esas AIs son de terceros para entrenarlas y luego generar contenidos donde la calidad queda de lado

📰 Identical front page on every UK paper today, with homepage takeovers too. Only 2nd time this has happened.

As editors and reporters we fear for the future of quality journalism - with unlawful scraping of content (theft) by AI firms. #MakeItFair

Crucially, the approach of the UK Creative Industries’ Make It Fair campaign - of resisting AI ‘piracy’ by preserving or strengthening copyright law - ignores what Bellos and Montagu make clear in Who Owns This Sentence? A History of Copyrights and Copywrongs:

    • Copyright is a major driver of inequality in the twenty-first century.
    • It plays a pivotal but often overlooked role when it comes to understanding the roots of disparities of wealth in modern societies.
    • the wealthiest corporations globally derive their power primarily from owning copyright and patents, with ‘sixteen of the fifty richest people in the world’ amassing their fortunes entirely or partially from copyright-related industries.

    What’s so fair about this?

  23. Every newspaper says #MakeItFair and urges the uk government to not allow #ai to be trained on creative works.

Funny how on the same day #Ofgem announces increase on water bills cap.

Maybe we should be using AI to free ourselves from menial work, not creating ai slop.

  24. The Government is siding with Big Tech over creators and as a member of the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, today we support the #MakeItFair campaign

Thanks to everyone who has responded to the Government consultation on copyright and AI - TODAY is the final chance to make your voice heard!

  26. That’s why I’m asking for you to send them your thoughts. Even if you’re not a member of the University of Alberta community. Higher education is a global endeavour – every year I teach students from all over the globe. So everyone is affected when university education suffers, and everyone benefits when it improves.

  27. So, that all is what I wrote to president Bill Flanagan and Board of Governors chair Kate Chisholm. I have interacted with them in the past, in my brief time as Vice-President and President of our union. I know that it’s easy for them to shrug off one person’s story; but less easy to shrug off many people’s stories.

  28. I am calling on you to make it fair by:
    - Providing continuing, secure appointments to contract-based instructors and researchers at the University of Alberta
    - Providing benefits to all academic staff at the University of Alberta, regardless of length of appointment
    - Upholding the university’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, by reducing pay gaps between appointment types to ensure all academic staff are compensated fairly for their work”

  29. “I look forward to some day being able to recommend the University of Alberta to others as a supportive place to work, as an employer that lives up to its stated ideals, that lifts up all members of the community.

  30. “You have seen a massive departure of skilled and valuable academics during the recent rounds of cuts. I have seen people leave voluntarily because of the atmosphere those cuts created, and because of the ongoing indifference of administration to the difficult conditions some of your most dedicated employees work under.

  31. “Having served as AASUA president, I know how easy it is to see these issues in an adversarial way. But I encourage you to realize that there are ways to change the status quo that would benefit not only the people and the community you claim to serve, but also things like the university's bottom line and organizational efficiency. I encourage you to look for those solutions, to work on building bridges.

  32. (Side note: TRAS are Trust-funded Research Associate Staff, a category of research-only employment here at the University of Alberta. TRAS folks have similarly precarious employment to contract instructors like me. TLAPO is a jaw-breaking acronym referring to academics in administrative and library posts who are also on precarious contracts.)

  33. “Quality education means secure employment. My story is an ATS story, but I have colleagues in TRAS and TLAPO with similar issues. They are just as much members of our community as I am, and as our securely-employed colleagues are.

  34. “I am a qualified, highly-skilled teacher and researcher. You both - as president of the university and chair of the board of governors - have the power to steer our university in a different direction. You have the power to look longer-term, and build a community that actually does lift every member up. You have the power to employ us as instructors in a way that supports us better, so that we can support our students better.

    #UAlberta #MakeItFair

  35. “I feel a little less connected to the university, because although I have dedicated these years to building and delivering quality courses for my students, my employer treats me as disposable - as a lesser member of our community.

  36. “By keeping me on short-term contracts, the university is saving a little in payment for benefits, and in matching pension contributions. However, it is also paying extra in administration, having to create 2 or 3 new contracts a year. My students get a bit less of my time, because I have to prepare a job search 2 or 3 times every year, in advance of a contract ending.
