We’re opposite Parliament today with other creative industry organisations, to support a number of amendments to the Data Bill, which call for transparency measures to be implemented in relation to AI training #MakeItFair

Every newspaper says #MakeItFair and urges the uk government to not allow #ai to be trained on creative works.
Funny how on the same day #Ofgem announces increase on water bills cap.
Maybe we should be using AI to free ourselves from menial work, not creating ai slop.

That’s why I’m asking for you to send them your thoughts. Even if you’re not a member of the University of Alberta community. Higher education is a global endeavour – every year I teach students from all over the globe. So everyone is affected when university education suffers, and everyone benefits when it improves.

So, that all is what I wrote to president Bill Flanagan and Board of Governors chair Kate Chisholm. I have interacted with them in the past, in my brief time as Vice-President and President of our union. I know that it’s easy for them to shrug off one person’s story; but less easy to shrug off many people’s stories.

(Side note: TRAS are Trust-funded Research Associate Staff, a category of research-only employment here at the University of Alberta. TRAS folks have similarly precarious employment to contract instructors like me. TLAPO is a jaw-breaking acronym referring to academics in administrative and library posts who are also on precarious contracts.)

“By keeping me on short-term contracts, the university is saving a little in payment for benefits, and in matching pension contributions. However, it is also paying extra in administration, having to create 2 or 3 new contracts a year. My students get a bit less of my time, because I have to prepare a job search 2 or 3 times every year, in advance of a contract ending.
