If I was to complain about anything (other than the heat, the drought, the skeeters, and dog bombs) it would be that it was a little annoying to unroll the line as there were some unfortunate twists causing tangles. Small potatoes though. The whole project took… maybe 30 mins?
Happy camper! Leaving it on over night for what I hope is a deep drink for the shallow roots.

Pleased to report my first experience* with drip irrigation was crazy positive.
Grabbed a 50 ft role of 1/4 inch dripline (1/2 GPH every 12 inches pre-punched,) a pressure reducer, some pins and a premium hose quick connect. $25, tops.
It pieced together and installed FAST. 25ft down one side of the elderberry run, and 25 up the other. It’ll need some extra love when it’s not 95° post-sunset but this will work just fine for now.
*I experimented with DIY irrigation via PVC pipe and tiny dril holes before drip line was super available. It was TERRIBLE! UV destroyed the white pipe in one session.

Random anecdote for your Wednesday evening: While we have multiple rubber feed pans, our hens prefer to be fed from the random hubcaps we found in Grandpa’s shed, which is now their VERY comfortable coop.
Someday I need to see what they belonged to; “I feed my chickens from the hubcaps of a 79 Oldsmobile” -or whatever- would be a hoot.

Tonight I finished a project that has been on my to-do list for at least a year: Build decent chicken roosts.
I used two cheap, old, terrible metal sawhorses and 2x3s. I replaced the very sad MDF stringers with scrap 2x6.
I have an 18 inch overhang because I had slight concerns about stability and maybe sagging. It’s only a 4-ft span between 2x6s. I hope the ladies like them.

Today we scored quite the food waste haul at daycare. So much yummy stuff in there.
The baby had a blast supervising them.
If you have a neighbor who has hens, they absolutely want your peels, apple cores, floppy greens, bruised and mushy fruits ‘n veg, cooked rice, stale bread…

Yesterday @jillianmarisa read me an SM post from a person talking about how raising hens for eggs isn't about saving money. It listed lots of expenses, time sucks and hi-jinks. We both laughed. It's true.
Then, that night one of the new ladies took too long to go to bed. The auto-door went down locking her out. The new ones are always playing dumb games... Kids. 🙄
We have heavy predation pressure here, so I went to "rescue" her and put her to bed. And what thanks so I get? She attacked my face.
So, yeah. Most def not about saving money.

We picked up a number of new hens this past spring. A variety of wyandottes (new to us) and four cream leg bars. I’ve wanted CLBs for years, way before we began our chicken journey in 2021. Two escaped and one had a freak accident. Of course it had to be the expensive and hard to procure CLBs. 🙄
ANYWAY: Looky what I got this morning! 5 months, 11 days since we brought the few day old chicks home.
