  1. "It’s not ideal, but paying a small group of aristocrats £361 a day to turn up to a nice building and wrap themselves in dead stoat is a relatively affordable part of the furniture of a country in which the head of state is a 75-year-old man whose sole qualification is the ownership of a magic hat. The far more expensive and serious problem is that these people have a role in making our laws."

#labour retrenched on some political reforms they proposed - I am disappointed that apart from retiring peers at 80 & removing the last of the hereditaries #lordsReform is a damp squib - I was hoping for term limits and for patronage to be restricted - if not direct election by regions as Gordon Brown proposed

They currently claim that #votesAt16 have merely been deferred - although in my view if they do not get this done in 2025 it will be too late.

  5. It seems from the #kingsSpeech that #lasbour has chosen to focus on housebuilding and economic growth, but ducked some of the more dramatic reforms - eg #votesAt16 #lordsReform beyond removing hereditary peers

The measure most are lobbying for on the Labour Left - removing the #twoChildBenefitCap - I guess might be part of the Finance bill so not mentioned specifically now - but if I were one of them I would not hold my breath....

  7. @wood5y

Note: as well as retiring all peers over 80 in #lordsReform , #labour will also remove remaining hereditaries - the manifesto adds "Labour is committed to replacing the House of Lords with an alternative 2nd chamber more representative of the regions & nations. Labour will consult on proposals, seeking the input of the British public on how politics can best serve them"

Possibly you are a bit premature in your criticism - it has been on the agenda since 1911

Well I note your view - but I predict #PR will not appear in the #labour manifesto, whereas #votesAt16 & #lordsReform might well do

  10. “Simply removing the remaining hereditary peers wouldn’t change the habit of prime ministers stuffing the chamber with cronies, sons of KGB agents and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It wouldn’t significantly reduce the bloated chamber and cost to the public. Even after Blair’s reforms, there are still 777 members of the House of Lords who are eligible to vote – enough to fill eight doubledecker buses.”

    Peerages for pals is bullshit.
Automatic peerages for clergy is bullshit.

The House of Lords has to go.

    I agree. On both counts.
That's why I hope #LordsReform makes it to the #Labour manifesto.

  15. @gethin76 @calvjones

#LordsReform is a bloody good idea. Hope it stays in the manifesto.

We have Lebedev in the Lords.
Next, Dorries? That second chamber is FULL of people who shouldn't be there.

Who can oppose the idea of electing our legislators instead of having politicians creating peers at will?

I'm in bloody favour of the

  19. @fencoul

I very much doubt #FPTP will feature in the #LabourManifesto

#lordsReform will - that is more than enough politicalReform for one parliament.

Suggest #Scots get their finger out on #IndyRef2 - that should be the focus north of the border.

  21. Ed Davey will say Labour's plans for Lords reform without electoral reform is like "changing the tires when the cars on fire" in a speech later today.

Well it was one step - the only one since 1911

#Starmer right to propose much more significant #lordsReform to make it a true second chamber fit for a democracy.

#Labour never has supported #PR - like the Tories, it is not in their selfish interests.

It is the dilemma in any political system - those in power by definition are those favoured by current arrangements, so naturally they are reluctant to change them.

At least #Starmer is committed to #lordsReform - if he gets that done it would be more than #Blair or any previous #labourLeader managed

  26. @bingaddick sound like a Sterling (or #Euro!) Chap! I have voted #LibDems and #conservatives in past and more latterly #greenparty at local elections. I am now a solid tactical voter. Hoping #Labour finally grasp nettle of #electoralreform and bring in a proper #ProportionalRepresentation system for #Westminster and get #LordsReform done too!
