"Mon" étudiante a été embauchée à l'université, elle a eu sa première réunion récemment. Je lui demande si elle a rencontré de nouveaux mots, de nouvelles expressions idiomatiques.
Oui: surchargé. -

Remember when "Birds aren't real" was satire?
That was cool.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat lol the woman I was sitting next to on the bus today was having a phone conversation helping someone arrange a trip to Italy, and she was like "Yes, you should definitely get the trip insurance. You might not be able to get into Italy by summer, due to the possibility of World War 3."

Eureka! If we throw ICE into the ocean, we can solve fascism and climate change at the same time!

A: We just went to a cool interactive theatre show about how a totalitarian regime takes over.

You want to believe it’s a parody, because then it would’ve been really funny.

Heard a bit of Marketplace today, in which Kai Ryssdal heard about how academic publishing actually works. “Wait, you’re saying the reviewers are also not paid?!?”

Oh hey. What was I saying about governors and military leaders wanting some kind of "safe harbor" precedent from SCOTUS?
> Instead, Mr. Stitt [Governor of Oklahoma] said,
> Mr. Trump should have moved to federalize the
> troops in Illinois first. That they were probably starting to worry about whether they themselves might someday be vulnerable to insurrection-related prosecutions, in the (ridiculously unlikely but not lterally impossible!) event that some Democrat decided to prosecute a Republican for something?
So predictable it hurts.
> Asked if he thought other Republican governors might
> also speak up against the deployment on federalism
> grounds, he said he thought more would. “Maybe you
> just haven’t asked the right ones,” he said.Ha ha #LOLSob
And the Dems STILL don't have a plan. And they STILL don't think doing any more than the absolute bare minimum (if that!) is necessary. AFAICT they don't even think planning ahead is a good idea!

#LOLSOB at IL state police doing the "free speech zone." dance on behalf of ICE, at the end of a week where Pritzker made such a big deal out of siding with his constituents.
And Illinois is one of the *better* states, as far as state law enforcement goes. I wonder if Pritzker really gets how little control he actually has over what ISP and the locals do.

> erecting designated protest areas.Nobody remembers anything but the "free speech zone" is yet another bipartisan innovation from the Bush II era. It got called out then too, but Dems agreed that it was necessary, because the Business Of Government MUST proceed, donchaknow.
"They're just doing it for your safety, dear. Now you just scootch down the street a little so the nice gestapo can do their jobs without having to run you over or shoot you, and don't you worry your pretty little head about it anymore."

CW: USPol, the joke about the guy who jumps off the building, but real life
I am once again #LOLSOB at how tragically unprepared Team Blue Online are for the enthusiastic welcome and support the Dems in congress will be offering to the Vance administration.
Also for how desperate Dem leadership will be to put the executive branch entirely in charge of "cleaning up Trump's mess" the very moment that Trump is out of the picture, instead of trying to take charge of it themselves.
Also for how much more effective and durable the authoritarian consolidation will be, once it emerges from the disorder and unrest and chaos of Trump and his eventual departure. Though of course that's when any prediction at all gets tricky.
Also for how the Vance administration will start embracing lawlessness and political violence again as the consolidation phase proceeds.
But again, who the hell knows? Vance really is an unusually stupid and uninspiring person, and I say that as someone who lived through both Bush regimes. Vance is *shockingly* stupid and uninspiring even by GOP president standards. He has much better handlers than Trump but that's not saying much. They might not be able to pull it off.
Even so, "the legislative phase of authoritarian consolidation will work sorta like last time only faster and worse" still seems like a safe bet.
Last time for these purposes being 2001-2003. And that's if we're lucky enough not to have another 9/11 type event *in addition* to the Extremely Bad Economic Crash which we can now expect no later than spring of 2026 and probably much sooner.
After that post-Trump federal reorganization period though... That's when we (hopefully) start getting a sense of how hard we're likely to hit when we reach the bottom.
(The joke is that a guy jumps off a 100-story building claiming he can fly. As he's plummeting past the 50th floor a horrified resident is looking out the window, so he gives a big thumbs up, and yells "so far so good!")

This is one of the most brutally honest and easy to understand threads I’ve ever seen on Mastodon about Donald buyer’s remorse.
@Lana tells no lies. Or mince words. She speaks facts. We’re all finding out because of their fucking around. I have zero sympathy for them.
Bring your LOLSOB face. And some popcorn.

Many English speaking websites will crash when trying to handle the accent in my surname, so I deliberately have to enter my surname incorrectly on the payment gate page. And often times the error message is _the least_ helpful possible.
Northern Irish bus services are an example that got stuck in my mind.
