  1. It's such a treat living in a historical era when pretty much every day brings at least one terrifying and deadly serious news item that I know I shouldn't LOL about but I do anyway.

I should get a new screenshot of this old Hippo post. I downloaded this at some point when I was in a hurry and couldn't find the original.

  2. Today's "terrifying and deadly serious news item that I know I shouldn't have LOL'd about" went like this:

    > Xi asked whether the U.S. and China could avoid the
    > β€œThucydides Trap,” which refers to how tensions
    > historically between a rising and ruling power have
    > often resulted in a war.

Welp. If you were waiting for a clear signal from Beijing about whether they regard the new geopolitical balance of power as irreversible, and whether they're committed enough to shaping the new equilibrium that they'll use military force if necessary, there it is. Hard to be more direct than that without violating protcol.

Not that anybody in the US executive branch is worth trying to reason with, but I guess it makes to start being blunt early, so the *next* administration will have gotten the message by the time they take office. This administration might as well be a mirror maze full of adolescent ferrets as far as negotiation is concerned. Plus other countries will get it too, including the EU and Russia.
