  1. I think this #Linus/#LTT video makes it very clear this thing I've always thought about #Linux - Linux has been for a while now, extremely ready for Developers and Tinkerers. Ready doesn't mean trouble-free, nope, but usable AND pleasant to use (a big productivity boost even in my case) - but will encounter issues that these groups of people will be able to solve, or, work around them with relative ease.

    For
normies though, nah, it's def not ready to varying extents depending on who you are. This doesn't mean that they couldn't use Linux, cos it is indeed still usable and pleasant to use for ~90% of use cases - but they will most def encounter issues they absolutely would not be able to solve on their own, and we know how not a small number of people in the Linux user community are useless or even harmful and shouldn't be relied on for help (for these normies).

For normies that still wish to use Linux, they def can but it's def highly recommended for them to only do so if they have someone (IRL) they can rely on for help - like any friends or fam members who are already using Linux, no different than when you're growing up and using
#Windows/#macOS for the first time. Also, thanks to #Microsoft, the incentive to ditch Windows for something like Linux has been steadily growing and may even make the learning pains of using/experimenting with Linux more acceptable and worth it, compared to staying on a sinking ship that is Windows.

These people however may also opt for macOS, tho I think the biggest blocker for
#Apple from gaining market share in this space is the fact that their OS is locked to their hardware, and their hardware - as amazing as they are, are incredibly locked down and not upgradable/serviceable. Anyway, someday we may see the day where Linux is ~99-100% ready for normies, but today is def not the day. Videos like LTT's and maybe others too are good sources on why that is the case, to us who may already be too familiar with Linux to 'have the eyes' to see these issues. It's also why I started documenting my Linux Wiki in the first place, when I migrated away from Windows - as a reminder on the issues I stumble upon, and how I solved them.

#Microsoft password service is still screwed nine ways to Sunday for one of my #Outlook accounts though.

  8. RE: mastodon.online/@koteisaev/116

I can only give the following advice since I don't have your device

    • Check ALL sources which have reputable Open Source android replacement OS
    • When you've found one that supports your brand of android, verify twice that your model is also supported, including it's submodel number
    • make a backup if the device has important unsynced data
    • expect a PITA of a detailed install procedure
    • check all error messages and do what is written to the LETTER
    • failing to do the above will result in a bricked device which may have cost you a couple to many of months of cash gathering!
    • learn to work with the alternatives programs, just like Huawei users have learned to work with the flourishing Huawei OS which is FREE of GOOGLE tracking
    • be patient
    • be patient
    • be patient

If your phone is not supported

Alas you're in the same boat as I am with my six android devices

    solutions

    • next time buy a Huawei phone with Harmony(?) OS free of googleor
    • go the PITA route of finding a supported high to good performance android which is new in model for the open source OS you want.
    • go the easy route and get a low performing android with OLD chipset and Linux distro for android pre installed

  9. Android dead on 01 September 2026 (09-01-2K26)

Unless you've been living under a rock at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, you know that google wants to close the Android Platform up, after having made sure that many hundreds of millions (actually more than (5 * 10↑ 9)) Androids are running globally.

Google wants to close up Android tighter that a father isolated his promiscuous daughter in the dark ages...

    • Some bullets points

    • Android development spawned in 2003 by Android, Inc.
    • Android Inc fetches the Open Source Linux kernel and studies to use it for it's upcoming smart phone platform in 2003
    • Google gobbled them up in 2005

    Android was not google's idea!

    Android was not google's idea!

    Android was not google's idea!

    • Android beta is released November 5, 2007
    • Android stable v1.0 is released September 23, 2008

    • Google made sure that in the years that followed they subtly started to make certain things hard to do, which were easy and open in the beginning

    • Way in the beginning, those of you who had an android then remember how easy it was to install software on your phone

    • When you install anything now that's Open Source playstore tells you that it's unsafe.

    • Even when you open a PO3 / IMAP account on your android, google shows you the perfectly fine server certificate and tells you it's not good, forcing you to click advanced then yes to use an email account NOT sanctioned by google, in their gmail android program

    • gmail android is a POS in comparison with the awsome MUTT OpenSource mail client

    • installing KDE_Connect a magnificent program suite which makes your android communicate properly with any Linux or BSD server / client gives problems too and is even SABOTAGED by android comms & battery protocol

    • the battery protocol constantly kills KDE_Connect making transfer and control a PITA

    • the comms protocol drops packets of KDE_Connect making it look like the program fails horribly

    • install KDE_Connect on an Open Source Android distro and you will see that the program suite not only works perfectly, it transfers files as fast as your phones tranceiver will pump them to your target phone or computer, running and Open Source Operating System

    The beginning of the END

    • Google starts with forcing programmers to submit a government issued ID for just writing software, released on the app store
    • no Open Source programmer is crazy enough to do so, so you now need other means like FDroid & similar to install them, or go straight to their Codeberg or github pages to fetch them, making phone illiterates losing access to their beloved Open Source android programs
    • Google annouces that it will block non sanctioned (Open Source) programs from installing after undisclosed ammount of time
    • Google announces the date when it will hard block you, the propriator of your Androids to install software on your OWN FUCKING COMPUTER!!!*

WTF google! have you gone microSLOP?

We the people can stop Alphabet from this bullshit

    • Those of us who live in the EU especially have a tremendous stopping power, to the BULLYING of Alphabet regardless of which EU country you live in

    WHY?

    • Google has a market of hundreds of millions of high android spending users there
    • Loosing the EU all together will be a tremendous financial blow to google
    • Remember that apple bowed to EU will and put USBC connectors on their hardware way before the deadline was put
    • apple did that globally, because that makes logistical sense
    • apple bowed to the EU because of financial greed, not the fine

    • Alphabet is in a similar boat when google is stopped there to close the platform it's logistically easier to just remove the measures globally on their android platform

    Rest of Terra

    • The rest of us not stated in the below doc should do the following
    • call our governments to do something by calling Ambassador / consul of US to give letter with grievances even if your country has less than 750.000 inhabitants, the protest matters, find your representatives and do it
    • find alternative OS to run on your current and future androids
    • DITCH android if and when the lockdown comes

    • that means we the people gave up and lost

    • android humanity is than fiucked

    • no one of us wants to see that

FIGHT for your Android rights. The computer is your private posession!

Sending Universal Love and Universal Energy to all who read this doc

  16. Modula-2, UCSD P-System, and the birth of Scala

I stumbled across this tidbit from Hacker News.

I never liked that #Borland stuffs. And used to program in #Pascal in #UCSD P-system (my alma mater). When I got to the US Department of Defense they wanted me for my #C and #COBOL skills and then they sent me to an Air Force School where I studied Modula-2 and Ada.

I did a lot of work in Modula-2, which doesn't exist anymore. Modula-3 does, but in the meantime Scala was in the works. #Ada is still actually a thing. We didn't want clever, like those one liner #Perl challenges that folks use to put in their signature lines to demonstrate how clever they thought they were through obfuscation.

Clever is bad. Clever opens up a whole universe of unexpected behavior and potential vulnerabilities. Maybe that's why #Rust became so organically popular - because it's safe by design and nowadays it's included in the Linux kernel more and more.

When you're designing software for missle guidance systems you most certainly do not want clever. The job is simple and ambiguity is potentially catastrophic in warfare.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this interview, I can identify with the #Timex_Sinclair - my dad bought me one and that membrane keyboard was horrendous, but I was persistent and eventually I was writing code in cutting edge languages on mainframes and #Vaxen.

Many of the stories about how one thing or another came about were through frustrations; like the impetus for #Linus the #Linux kernel coz #MINIX just didn't cut it, and who wants to trodge through snow drifts in #Helsinki to the computer lab when you can be warm and cozy, drinking beers in your dorm room?

This story is kinda like that too, which I can really appreciate, even though I've never played with #Scala.

I hope you enjoy it too.

  24. Linus Torvalds and Bill Gates Meet for the First Time

In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel, recently met for the first time. The historic encounter took place at a dinner hosted by Sysinternals' creator Mark Russinovich.

This rare moment brought together icons from Linux and Windows, with Microsoft’s Dave Cutler also meeting Torvalds for the first time. As Russinovich humorously noted in a LinkedIn post, “No major kernel decisions were made.” linkedin.com/posts/markrussino

  25. Snoopy Tennis with Bill Pepper (It’s a Podcast, Charlie Brown and Atari Bytes)

Welcome to another episode of Play Comics, where we volley between the pixelated world of video games and the ink-stained pages of comic strips! This week, we’re serving up a nostalgic slice of handheld gaming with Snoopy Tennis for the Game Boy Color—a game that lets you smash tennis balls as Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the gang while channeling the quirky humor of the Peanuts comic strip. But don’t let Snoopy’s “World Famous Tennis Player” persona fool you; his skills might be as questionable as his geography knowledge (Wimbledon in Kansas City, anyone?).

Joining us on this court-side adventure is Bill Pepper, host of It’s a Podcast, Charlie Brown and Atari Bytes. Bill brings his expertise in all things Peanuts and retro gaming to help us dissect whether Snoopy’s racket-wielding antics are a grand slam or just another double fault. Expect witty banter, deep dives into Snoopy’s many alter egos, and maybe even some tales about Crybaby Boobie or Molly Volley from the comic strip lore.

So grab your sweatbands, dodge those bugs mistaking the tennis court for a highway, and prepare for an episode that’s more fun than Snoopy getting tangled in the net. Game on!

    Learn such things as:

    • How does a dog even hold a tennis racket?
    • How did we all manage to fall in love with these kids?
    • Is this game even real or is it just another one of Snoopy’s fever dreams?
    • And so much more!
