Checked the peaches again
While grocery shopping I went back to the isle with the Del Monte peaches for a closer look at the ingredients. Wouldn’t that label “no sugar added” mean just peaches and water to you? It’s what I believed.
The label says “half the calories and sugar of peaches in heavy syrup.” Hmm…. what does that mean? Exactly what are the actual ingredients anyway?
Apparently, according to the listed ingredients, artificial sugars are not considered sugar. Acesulfame Potassium is an artificial sugar about 200 times as sweet as real sugar and not recommended for people with kidney issues. Sucralose is the artificial sugar most often found in little yellow packets under the name Splenda. It can raise insulin resistance and also cause kidney issues. Those are not good words for a diabetic with kidney issues like me.
Nope, I’m not going to eat these peaches either. I need to be more vigilant reading labels and understaning what I’m putting into my body. I seriously don’t trust the food industry at all. And, it’s getting worse! Anything made in a lab is gonna need a lab of medications to digest it.
My visit to the Meijer store left me very puzzled. I saw so many empty shelves on both the grocery side and the non-edible side. There were many, many items marked down on the non-edible side and it was more empty. The grocery side had no markdowns that I could find but many empty shelves. I splurged a little of my grocery money on a non-edible marked down item I couldn’t resist.
I’ve wanted Corelle dishes for a very long time so I could get rid of my Dollar Tree plastic dishes. When I found several of the normally $6.99 each Corelle dishes marked to only $.74 each. I bought eight small plates and five cereal bowls. That price was cheaper than the thrift stores. Now I can stop buying one dish at a time. I prefer the smaller, salad size, plates over the larger dinner plate size. I looked for serving bowls but there wasn’t any marked down. I prefer to use serving bowls as small batch mixing bowls. I’ll look again this week. Maybe more of the Corelle will be marked down.
As I walked around looking I saw several employees pulling items of clothing and shoes from shelves then taking it all into the back storage area. I asked a couple employees why so many empty shelves and all I got was “a supply issue” from them. I don’t believe that’s true. How is removing stock a supply issue? It’s possible the store is closing but not announcing it yet. If it does close it means the area where I live will be deeper in a food desert with fewer store options. We’ve already seen some stores close permanently. Has anyone else seen store closings in your area? Is it troubling you to see it?
I hurried to finish getting my groceries and leave before I could be tempted to look at other non-edible markdown bargains located everywhere I turned. Food is more important these days.
NaNa’s thoughts: I needed lard for my food storage. As I picked a package of lard off the shelf a man standing there looking kinda puzzled turned toward me and asked, “ma’am where do you store your lard to keep it for a long time?” My response was “I keep mine inside my skin. It’s been there for years.”
With a smile I added that he should always store food the same way the grocery does.

Over the past 6 weeks or so, I have cooked two boneless pork butts in my dutch oven. (In the USA, this cut of meat is called the "butt" because it comes from the shoulder 🤷♀️). I have reserved and frozen the leftover liquid. Today, I thawed it out, added an equal part water by volume, brought it to a simmer, and then froze it in this ice-cube tray. I consider this to be seasoning rather than stock because it has all of the seasoning from the butts in it.
What should I do with the leftover lard?
