According to folklore, daffodils were originally white, and a favoured flower of Persephone. When Hades caught her, his touch turned the blooms yellow. It’s unsurprising that the daffodil is considered the flower of the underworld and they often appear on graves. In the Victorian language of flowers, daffodils meant 'regard'.

In the Victorian language of flowers, the crocus meant gladness and cheerfulness. White croci represented truth, innocence and purity. The purple variety implied success, pride and dignity. The yellow type meant joy.

Flemish engraving on paper.The description doesn't say so, but this appears to be a betrothal portrait. It's interesting that there were also carnations on the Jewish marriage contract (see Ketubah in post above). So I guess that some of the Language of Flowers crosses several cultures.

Vintage Postcard: Lipton’s Advertising, ca 1908
This lovely postcard depicts the Language of Flowers. You'll notice that the carnation, daisy, daffodil and tulip are initialed. I suspect these were someone's birth month flowers 😃
Back in the early 60s I collected little Red Rose tea cards from my mother's boxes. Mine had songbirds. Does anyone remember that?

I feel like these are pretty self-explanatory as sources of inspiration 😂 there's so much variation in form and color, and I love the idea of the #LanguageOfFlowers, and that including specific herbs or flowers in a piece could add additional symbolism and meaning for those willing to look.
