  1. I just spent an hour #Labbing an #L2TPv3 pseudowire native fragmentation (#PWE3) problem. Turns out the platform doesn’t •do• native fragmentation, but it took forever for me to figure this out because my oversized #IPv6 pings were making it across the wire. This shouldn’t happen without native fragmentation.

Two coffees later it dawned on me that I was pinging from the device that was anchoring the pseudowire, so IPv6 was fragmenting at the source. A packet capture showed the fragmentation headers •and• the missing MRRU attribute in the L2TPv3 pseudowire setup. I should have started there.

  6. There’s always another 🕳️ to go down. Now it’s a packet-level analysis of raw L2TPv3 pseudowires vs UDP encapsulated ones to find out •why• the raw ones come in with a lower automatic MTU than the UDP ones do. On the surface, this makes no sense. #NetEng #Labbing #L2TP #MTU #TunnelsAllTheWayDown

  7. The problem with labbing cool networking ideas? Rabbit holes. Every step along the way, there’s another “Oh! Wouldn’t it be better if I integrated •this• idea?” Taking the red pill leads to a fun day of network geekery, but doesn’t get me any closer to the original goal. The “Simplicity where possible. Complexity where necessary.” mantra applies long before we get to the design stage. #NetEng #Labbing #RabbitHole #KISS

  8. I haven’t played extensively with multicast routing for a little over a decade, but here I am grinding the rust off of the metal. Gotta stay fresh if I want to engage in silly proof-of-concept labs. #NetEng #Multicast #Labbing #WorthIt

  9. Who keeps me up labbing out an idea for DoH/DoT filtering until 2am the night before I fly out on a European vacation? My boss. That’s who. I anticipate that he’ll want me to write it up on the plane too. #PerilsOfSelfEmployment #Labbing #NetEng #InfoSec
