Kim Gordon's Girl in a Band doesn't really go into how #SonicYouth wrote their songs but she does mention that Kim or Thurston kind of made up their songs with the band, while Lee mostly brought pre-composed songs to the rest of the band.

So when I listen to Sonic Youth now I kind of hear one band member making up some simple riff to form a song -- Thurston doing it on guitar, Kim doing it on bass, Lee doing it on guitar -- then the rest of the band just play whatever the hell they want over it.

And that's how you get a Sonic Youth song.
