"San Francisco’s ABC7 station says FCC could take it off the air. Here’s why.

KGO-TV has begun asking Bay Area viewers to tell federal regulators to keep the San Francisco station on the air as part of an ABC campaign responding to an unusual review of broadcast licenses for eight Disney-owned stations.

The local appeal, which aired Monday, says 'ABC7 has proudly served the Bay Area for more than 75 years' and that the Federal Communications Commission is 'questioning our commitment to viewers by threatening to take us off the air.'
It urges viewers to contact the FCC by July 29.

The campaign does not mean KGO-TV is immediately going dark. Its license remains in effect while the FCC reviews the renewal application.

But the public push marks an escalation in a broader fight between Disney’s ABC and the FCC, which has also opened a separate case involving whether the daytime program 'The View' should continue to receive a news-program exemption from federal equal-time rules.

In its order, the FCC said it was investigating Disney’s ABC stations for possible violations of the Communications Act and agency rules, including its prohibition on unlawful discrimination. The agency said early renewal was needed to determine whether the stations had been operating in the public interest.

The stations are KGO-TV in San Francisco, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, WABC-TV in New York, WLS-TV in Chicago, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, KTRK-TV in Houston, WTVD in Raleigh-Durham and KFSN-TV in Fresno.

The FCC’s Media Bureau ordered Disney’s ABC in April to file early renewal applications for its owned TV stations years before the licenses would ordinarily come due.

KGO Television Inc., the licensee of KGO-TV, filed its application May 28. The FCC accepted the applications for filing and set deadlines for public participation: petitions to deny are due June 29, oppositions are due July 29 and replies are due Aug. 5.

ABC has pushed back sharply, describing the order in filings as 'unlawful, arbitrary and unconstitutional' and saying the agency is targeting disfavored editorial voices. FCC Chair Brendan Carr has said broadcast licensees have a unique obligation to operate in the public interest.
The FCC licenses individual broadcast stations, not national television networks.

The dispute has already drawn local reaction. Free speech advocates protested outside KGO-TV’s offices in September after ABC suspended 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' following pressure from the FCC and station groups over the host’s comments about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk."

  2. A certain streaming services has been cancelled. I'd been thinking of adding Hulu when it renewed in five weeks, but I guess that's $250 or so saved. Next up is to let the local advertisers I see on #KGO know I'll try not to buy things from them as long as they continue to support actions that make our First Amendment rights be null and void.

  3. As a #DJT administration returns to #WhiteHouse, #FoxNewsRadio syndicate gets a big #BayArea boost as #corporate owners move the syndicated #RWNJ #FoxNews on #KSFO-AM from 560 on dial with only 5000 watt reach to 810 AM giving that programming from #SeanHannity, #DanBongino, #BrianKilmeade and others 10x their previous signal reach.

That 50kw Class A signal they take over was previously known as #KGO’s and was sent from the middle of #SanFranciscoBay, on a tower from alongside the #DumbartonBridge providing a "clear channel" reach that can be heard as far east as to the Rocky Mountains.

Amongst many #corporate #costcutting maneuvers and on-air personality silencing being made, owner #Cumulus media #broadcasting announces it is shifting sports #talkradio shows on #KNBR 680 out of its longtime #SF studios to 49ers #NFL football stadium 49 minutes south of city in #SantaClara .

  6. Goodbye #KGO. At its height, the most listened to station in Northern California.

Working there was an honor. It will be missed.
