"Fire-flame vessel: An exquisitely crafted 4,500-year-old pot from a mysterious culture in Japan
Archaeologists aren't sure why prehistoric people in Japan made these elaborate vessels decorated with flames.
This ceramic vessel was made in prehistoric times on Honshu, the largest island in Japan. This type of pot is known as a fire-flame vessel ('ka'en doki' in Japanese), due to the stylized flames on the rim. Although other examples of these pots exist, the one in the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is the largest and best preserved of its kind. But no one's quite sure what its purpose was."

"Ancient Humans May Have Evolved a Remarkable Trick to Survive The Last Ice Age
When you think about it, it seems remarkable that humanity is still here.
Over the last few hundred thousand years, the world has changed a lot, sometimes in ways that might seem difficult for evolution to keep pace with.
Yet our species is remarkably resilient, repeatedly finding ways to survive changing conditions – through culture, technology, and even genetic changes.
Humanity is still evolving – and the genetic adaptability that allows us to thrive around the world today may have also contributed to past success, according to new genetic research from a team led by Yusuke Watanabe and Yoshiki Wakiyama of the University of Tokyo.
They analyzed genomes from 42 Jomon hunter-gatherers who lived in the Japanese archipelago, finding multiple genetic signatures consistent with adaptations to cold conditions in their much older ancestors."

New ancient DNA from Jomon shell mounds in Chiba Prefecture challenges the long-standing two-migration theory. One founding population, genetic drift, and 10,000 years — enough to look like two. #Jomon #AncientDNA #HumanEvolution https://www.anthropology.net/p/one-people-two-bloodlines-what-ancient

Ancient Jomon DNA reveals a lost East Asian lineage with the lowest Denisovan ancestry in the region
A new genetic study is rewriting what researchers know about early human migrations in East Asia, showing that the prehistoric Jomon people of Japan carried far less Denisovan DNA than any other ancient or modern population in the region...
