  2. Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

What a weird record by a weird (but great) band.
This record was neither jazz-funk nor 20 Greats, but a trap to lure the unsuspecting victim into listening to something completely different.

Published in 1979 by Industrial Records.
    I still own this record.

  7. Casiopea – Mint Jams (1982, Japan)

As randomly chosen via Fedi survey,[1] our next spotlight is on number 895 on The List, submitted by BrowniePoints.

The development of this recipe stretches back to 1976 and is a delightful addition to any sonic charcuterie board.

    • 4 musicians,[2] in their heyday
    • 1 each, freshly tuned: Yamaha SG-2000, Yamaha GS-1, Yamaha CS-70M, Yamaha CP-35, Moog Source, Roland Vocoder Plus, Yamaha BB-2000 Milk Bass, Yamaha YD-9000R
    • instrumental jazz fusion, to taste
    • 2 drops green colouring

Blend musicians with instruments, adding water as needed. Transfer to Chuo Kaikan Hall and fold in instrumental jazz fusion. Bring to a boil and then let steep on low heat over 2 nights.[3] Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve onto tape; reserve recordings. Pour recordings into large saucepan and add engineers and producers. Bring to a boil, then simmer until desired consistency reached. Add art, stir in green colouring, and remove from heat. Transfer to a mint vinyl record and let cool completely.

Makes approximately 36 minutes of jams. Will stay fresh at room temperature for 45+ years when properly stored.

    1. The survey choices that led to this spotlight were: “If you set you mind free, baby”, “Maybe you’d understand”, “Starfish and coffee”, and “Maple syrup and jam, oh oh” (following a survey that had “Starfish and coffee”/”Maple syrup and jam”/”Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine”/”And a side order of ham”). The last three were tied as the winning selections, so the survey results have been translated for three spotlights, each picking an album in The List that contains a (part of a) word from one of those phrases – in this case, “jam”. ↩︎
    2. Issei Noro on guitar, Tetsuo Sakurai on bass, Minoru Mukaiya on keyboards, and Akira Jimbo on (electric) drums. ↩︎
    3. This live album includes recordings from two shows at Chuo Kaikan Hall in Tokyo that took place in February 1982. ↩︎
