This weekend's pre-jam winter camp with our scouts group was really nice. Yes, a bit too much of a chill and some rain, but the youth have thoroughly enjoyed it. We did it with another group together whom we're joining up with for this year's #Jamboree
The biggest satisfier was the open fire cooking. Youth dug shallow fire pits in their patrols by spade from the grass. Then they made a fire with flint and steel in them, producing a good amount of coal/embers. They made a chili recipe in Dutch ovens that were then cooked in the hot coals/embers, giving them time to make garlic bread rolls in tin foil to go onto the fire next. After finished eating (in the dark by fire light), they got to build more of a fire in their pits for roasting marshmallows/smores for desert.
The next day they returned the fire pits with the cut out grass pieces again to satisfy the 'leave no traces' motto.
I think we're getting them into good shape for the 10 days after x-mas this year.

Pentagon fordert Pfadfinder auf, inklusive Richtlinien zu beenden oder militärische Partnerschaften zu verlieren – „Zurück zu Gott und Vaterland – sofort!“, sagte ein Sprecher des Pentagon
Am vergangenen Dienstag richtete ein Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums eine Warnung an die Organisation, die früher als Boy Scouts of America bekannt war: Kehrt zu den alten, ausgrenzenden Regeln zurück oder riskiert den Verlust eurer langjährigen Partnerschaft mit dem US-Militär.
Scouting America, wie die Organisation seit Februar 2025 heißt, hat in den letzten Jahren eine Reihe von Veränderungen zu mehr Inklusion vorgenommen. Im Jahr 2018 durften erstmals Mädchen den Cub Scouts beitreten und im darauffolgenden Jahr wurde ihnen ermöglicht, denselben Weg wie Jungen zum Eagle Scout, dem höchsten Rang bei den Pfadfindern, einzuschlagen. In den 2010er Jahren hob die Organisation das Verbot für offen schwule Pfadfinder auf und beendete das Verbot für offen schwule Erwachsene, Truppen zu leiten.
Die Pfadfinderbewegung hat seit ihren Anfängen eine enge Verbindung zum US-Militär, was zum großen Teil auf die Unterstützung der Organisation durch Präsident Teddy Roosevelt zurückzuführen ist. Die Pfadfinder förderten lange Zeit den Gebrauch von Waffen und christliche Ideale als wesentliche Grundsätze des Patriotismus, obwohl einige dieser Ideen im Laufe der Zeit gelockert wurden. Scouting America will „Jugendliche jeder Rasse, Religion, jedes Geschlechts, jeder ethnischen Herkunft und jedes wirtschaftlichen Status in Programmen zusammenbringen, um Charakter, Bürgersinn und Fitness zu entwickeln”, heißt es jetzt auf der Website der Organisation. „Es ist die Philosophie der Pfadfinder, alle Jugendlichen willkommen zu heißen, die bereit sind, die Werte der Pfadfinder anzunehmen und alle anderen Anforderungen für eine Mitgliedschaft zu erfüllen“ und „Vorurteile, Intoleranz und unrechtmäßige Diskriminierung sind innerhalb der Reihen der Pfadfinder Amerikas nicht akzeptabel.“
Sean Parnell, Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums, schrieb auf X, dass das Ministerium, das mit Scouting America bei einer Reihe von Projekten zusammenarbeitet, eine Auflösung dieser Partnerschaft in Betracht ziehen würde, sollte die Organisation nicht zu ihrer früheren Politik der Ausgrenzung zurückkehren. Parnell schrieb weiter, dass das „Kriegsministerium“ [sic] seit der Amtsübernahme durch Präsident Donald Trump und seinen Verteidigungsminister Pete Hegseth eine „sehr klare“ Haltung eingenommen habe: „Keine DEI mehr im DoW [Department of War]. Null Toleranz.“ Parnell behauptete, Scouting America habe „seinen Weg verloren“ und sagte, seine neuen, inklusiven Richtlinien „widersprechen den Werten dieser Regierung und dieses Kriegsministeriums“. Scouting sollte „sofort zu Gott und zum Vaterland zurückkehren!“, forderte er.
Die Forderungen kommen zu einer Zeit, in der die Trump-Regierung wiederholt damit gedroht hat, Hochschulen, gemeinnützigen Organisationen und privaten Unternehmen wegen ihrer DEI-Richtlinien (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) die Mittel zu streichen. Die Regierung hat insbesondere Richtlinien ins Visier genommen, die die Akzeptanz von Transgender-Personen oder die korrekte Vermittlung von Rassismus in der US-Geschichte fördern.
Der Sprecher des Pentagon deutete in seinem Beitrag an, dass Scouting America bereits mit dem Verteidigungsministerium zusammenarbeite, um eine „endgültige Vereinbarung“ über Änderungen zu treffen. „Wir glauben, dass wir unsere Partnerschaft mit Scouting America fortsetzen können, solange die Organisation schnell die sinnvollen Reformen ihrer Grundwerte umsetzt“, sagte Parnell. „Die Zeit läuft, und wir beobachten sie.“ In einer Erklärung gegenüber der Washington Post schien Scouting America zu bestätigen, dass es mit dem Verteidigungsministerium zusammenarbeitet, um Änderungen umzusetzen, obwohl unklar ist, um welche Änderungen es sich dabei handelt. „Wir sind ermutigt durch den heutigen Social-Media-Beitrag des Pentagon und freuen uns darauf, im Laufe der Zeit weitere Details bekannt zu geben“, erklärte die Organisation.
Wenn Scouting America den Forderungen des Pentagon nicht nachkommt, könnte die Gruppe den Zugang zu militärischen Einrichtungen verlieren – eine Maßnahme, die vor allem Kinder aus Militärfamilien treffen würde, die manchmal an Pfadfindergruppen auf US-Stützpunkten im Ausland teilnehmen. Ein wichtiges Beispiel für die Zusammenarbeit des Militärs mit Scouting America ist das jährliche Jamboree im Juli in West Virginia, wo Tausende von Pfadfindern an einem zehntägigen Gipfeltreffen teilnehmen. In der Vergangenheit hat das Verteidigungsministerium Ausrüstung für das Jamboree sowie medizinische, sicherheitstechnische und logistische Unterstützung durch Hunderte von Angehörigen der Nationalgarde, Reservisten und aktiven Soldaten bereitgestellt.
Meagan McGovern, Leiterin einer Pfadfinderinnengruppe und Mutter von drei Pfadfinderinnen, verfasste einen offenen Brief auf Substack, in dem sie die Organisation aufforderte, sich den Forderungen des Verteidigungsministeriums zu widersetzen. „Die Pfadfinderbewegung gehört nicht zur US-Regierung. Scouting America wird nicht von der US-Regierung finanziert. Lokale Truppen werden von Freiwilligen geleitet“, schrieb McGovern und fügte hinzu, dass „die Bundesregierung nun versucht, Scouting America dazu zu zwingen, Kinder auszuschließen“. „Nachzugeben wäre ein Verrat an allem, was die Pfadfinderbewegung zu lehren vorgibt“, fuhr McGovern fort. „Es ist kein Zeichen von Mut, einer mächtigen Institution zu erlauben, zu diktieren, wer dazugehört. Es ist keine Integrität. Es lehrt Kinder, dass Werte verhandelbar sind, wenn Druck ausgeübt wird.“
McGovern schloss mit den Worten: „Die Pfadfinderbewegung hat Weltkriege, kulturelle Veränderungen und massive institutionelle Versäumnisse überstanden, weil sie auf lokaler Ebene aufgebaut ist, von Familien und Freiwilligen, die an etwas Besseres für ihre Kinder glauben. Diese Familien schauen gerade jetzt genau hin. Und sie werden sich daran erinnern, wer sich gewehrt hat und wer geschwiegen hat.“

I bought #MarioParty #Jamboree for the #Nintendo #Switch this evening, and we had a lot of fun playing it! Just like we've had playing the previous Mario Party game. The only thing we missed from that game was the "partner party" mode, where you play together against the CPU. Did they get rid of that, or just boomer me who can't find it? I think we've pretty much concluded that competitive multiplayer isn't doing anything good for our relationship, lol
