Thoughts on stages of software problematique
"Scuba, Panic, and Empathy" is a Derek Sivers essay which @ColinTheMathmo had submitted to HN a ways back. It addresses awareness of your own and others' internal states.
Which got me thinking to levels of maturity in dealing with SW / Infotech practice:
- Concepts & Mechanics
- Language --- syntax, grammar, edge-cases.
- Problem & domain space: the real-world area you're applying infotech to
- Machine & OS themselves: Hardware, fundamental limits, interactions, optimisation.
- Human & social factors: users, dev team, other support (ops, QA, maintenance), clients, management, investors, regulators, ...
- Personal psychological limitations
The last is the item I see addressed by the essay. At some point, your principle challenge in intellectual work is your own head and what's going on in there.
Which I'm not sure I'm expresing clearly, but hey, that's another challenge.
