Random #Debian Astro package of the week is iraf-wcstools. WCSTools is a set of software utilities, written in C, which create, display and manipulate the world coordinate system of a FITS or IRAF image, using specific keywords in the image header which relate pixel position within the image to position on the sky. Auxiliary programs search star catalogs and manipulate images.
This package contains the IRAF package.

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is python3-pyraf. PyRAF is a command language for running IRAF tasks in a Python like environment. It works very similar to IRAF CL, but has been updated to allow such things as importing Python modules, GUI parameter editing and help. It can be imported into Python allowing you to run IRAF commands from within a larger script.

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is iraf-xdimsum. XDIMSUM is a package for creating accurate sky subtracted images from sets of dithered observations. While the observations need not be in the infrared, the dominance of the variable sky background in infrared data requires the dithering and recombination of many short carefully sky subtracted exposures to produce deep images.

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is iraf-mscred. The MSCRED external package is used to reduce CCD mosaic data in multiextension FITS format. This format is produced for example by the Data Capture Agent when observing with the NOAO CCD Mosaic Imager, as well as similar instruments from AAO, CFA, CFHT, ESO, INT and others.
The tasks in the mscred package perform the following functions:
* display the mosaic data as an apparent

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is iraf-rvsao. This package obtains radial velocities and velocity dispersions using cross-correlation methods or emission line fits. It consists of several SPP tasks:
* XCSAO and PXCSAO: cross-correlate spectra,
* EMSAO and PEMSAO: find emission lines in spectra,
* BCVCORR: solar system barycentric velocity correction,
* SUMSPEC: add and/or modify spectra,
* LINESPEC: synthetic emission line

Few days ago, @ubuntu 24.04 #Noble Numbat was released. As always, it comes with the latest packages from @DebianAstro. An important new package is "iraf-st4gem" with many important tasks from #IRAF #STSDAS now thankfully maintained by USNGO.

PyRAF, the #Python interface for #IRAF, had just a new release 2.2.2. Main improvements are for macOS with Cocoa support. On macOS, it is now also a pure Python package, making the installation more robust. https://pypi.org/project/pyraf/

I could today successfully built #IRAF on a @fedora 40 (beta) system. Very few adjustments were needed to get it compiled with the default compiler flags.
Still we look for someone who volunteers to maintain a proper package for this still important #AstronomySoftware piece. -
Yesterday, I found (and fixed) an at least 37 years old bug in #IRAF CL. It appeared already in the first IRAF version where we have source code (2.8). If you have an older version, please let me know! #SoftwareArcheology

@olebole #IRAF 2.18 is now uploaded to #Debian unstable (sid) and built for 12 Debian architectures and ports; from the classic i386 to the latest loong64 port. It will run on the Raspberry as well! https://packages.debian.org/source/unstable/iraf

Preview for what is coming new in (Community) #IRAF for macOS ... I'd need brave testers.

If you still use #IRAF: The online documentation for all IRAF tasks, for selected external packages, the IRAF manuals, release notes, the PyRAF tutorial, and much more is available here: https://iraf.readthedocs.io

@apolitosb from their paper: "While the IRAF (Tody 1986) system has been 64-bit compatible for a number of years (Fitzpatrick 2012), it quickly fell behind the requirements of modern operating systems due to a lack of ongoing maintenance."
#NOIRLab arrogantly ignores that the community is continuously maintaining #IRAF since seven years. https://iraf-community.github.io/ provides official #AppleSilicon support since 2021. NOIRLab unfortunately refuses to cooperate or even coordinate.

Some weeks ago, I asked NOIRLab how we could cooperate and join forces towards a common maintainance of #IRAF. Now I got the answer that they have *zero* interest in cooperation with the community. In this aspect, NOIRLab is still stuck in the 20th century.

The IRAF poster shown at #ADASS2023 invites to test and give feedback, so I wrote to the author to establish a contact between NOIRLab and the IRAF community. However, no communication, no test offer so far. Working together would be essential for the future of #IRAF.

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is ximtool. Ximtool provides an image display capability to remote client applications for IRAF using the standard imtool/iis image display protocol. The image display server allows a number of image frame buffers to be created and displayed. The client can read and write data in these frame buffers. Any frame or combination of frames can be displayed.
