Пожалуй, iPaq HX4700 можно считать самым известным и легендарным КПК от компании HP. О его крутом VGA-дисплее слагали легенды, а оптический тачпад, выполняющий роль "мышки", вообще казался чем-то инопланетным в мире портативных компьютеров. Не подводил 4700'ый и в плане производительности: мощнейший ARM-процессор от Intel, целых 64 мегабайта оперативной памяти и дискретный GPU от компании ATi - это было очень круто по меркам устройства, которое помещалось в карман! @billgoats i have another one. In #soaring (flying planes without engines) we long used #ipaq s for navigation (screen sunlight readable), attached to the windshields. One pilot came to me and told me that his IPAQ would stall when the course of the plane was between 270 and 300 degrees. Somewhat perplexed I went looking and found out that the IRDA port in IPAQs had a bug, that would cause 100% cpu if the sun shone into the IRDA port. Firmware update fixed that.

Found newer Windows Mobile 6.5.3 images for HP iPAQ 214 than what was installed on my device, so decided to give an update a try🤞🏻. Gosh, the ere are even some #Linux images for it - maybe I’ll try that someday as well 🙌🏻

And also I managed to replace a worn out supercapacitor on my latest HP iPaq 214.

On my first attempt I totally failed the job because time keeping when the battery removed did not appear and also I disturbed a few neighboring components.

So on a second attempt I came with 300ºC hot air and solder paste and the cap exploded in my face 😂.

The ARM emulator, when it was in beta (MS BetaPlace), it includes special ARMv4 images for Windows Mobile 2003 SE. That one is hard to find, but I'll upload it very soon.

As of now, I'm working on a collection and I need (older) ROMs. So if you have a WM device lying around (like iPAQs), contact me if you have a backup ROM. Preferably ARM-based iPAQs due to it's StrongARM models currently not emulated.

So I had to open the device and connect it directly to the bench power supply set up at 5V 2A for like 5-10 minutes. After that I plugged it back into the device and it got immediately recognized 👍🏻.

Hope that helps many other retro gadget enthusiasts out there 🙌🏻

But there are a few more important things:

1) if your new battery is 4mm - try to put a battery management system PCB next to the battery and not on top of it to make the whole construction as thin as possible

2) battery terminals are way to flimsy and easy to break, but can be soldered no problem with a good flux

3) probably the most important: at first my new battery didnt want to charge and was not really recognized by the device:

So I just carefully desoldered an old battery from a BMS board and then soldered a new one instead.

And the device successfully booted with a new battery 🕺

Now it's time to set up a #windowsxp virtual machine and install Microsoft Active Sync - synchronise it and make it realise it's 2024 😂.

A few more minor issues were discovered and fixed - one of the pins on a 3.5mm audio output got unsoldered over time - took me like 1 minute to make it good as new. Also stylus didn't want to stay inside because of the damaged holding mechanism - nothing a drop of hot glue can't keep in place ✅

Today I successfully revamped my 20+ years old Compaq iPaq H3835 - one of the first ever PDAs with a color display and Windows Mobile. I also had a foldable keyboard for this thing back in 2001-2003. I use to annoy people on the bus home from my lyceum by unfolding that keyboard and coding something using a Pocket Programming Language - a C based language someone made specifically for Windows CE and Windows Mobile. This early version gives some very nice insights into the game's development. First, I can bust a myth: The #Nokia N-Gage version is not a port of the PlayStation game! Instead, it's a direct port of the #iPaq version from 2001. Pretty much all of the iPaq code is still there (incl. FMV stuff), they just made what was needed to get it working on the N-Gage.

Even some (unused) assets are still there and the level file is taken unmodified from the iPaq version, too.

I really need to dig deeper into this. 🙂

Well, I scored two Pocket PCs yesterday for only £2 each!
I wanted the left one (the hx2790b) for a long time and it's crazy that it's in such good condition!
The right one (the 3600) has seen better days but it works.

Rummaging in the cupboard where old gadgets, cables and what not live, I came across this absolute gem: a #Compaq #iPAQ Pocket PC from 2002 or thereabouts.

This was the time of feature phones and introducing devices that tried to be a Windows PC in your hand. The thinking was great but the tech and reality didn't happen until the smartphone age dawned in 2007 when the iPhone appeared.

Does the iPAQ work? Well, first I need to find the charger for it...

Some kind person donated this to my collection this week: A fully functional HP IPAQ rx5720 with all its original accessories. Even the battery holds a charge 🔋👍

After some time playing with it I can confirm that Windows Mobile 5 is a steaming pile of 💩
