  5. Charles Rusnell continues to do some of the best investigative journalism out there.

“If you’re in construction like we are, it is a huge disappointment to know that our leadership would just give away our money for what were worthy projects, and then wash their hands of it when they’re not completed and when hard-working Albertans are not paid."

“It is egregious and we just can’t trust leadership that doesn’t have the gumption to enforce accountability and to enforce the monitoring of taxpayers’ money to ensure that it is being used in the manner that was intended."

  8. This is a great documentary about the investigative journalist Christo Grozev from Bellingcat. He successfully tracked down Navaly's assassins and has been tirelessly working against the Russian regime. We briefly crossed paths many years ago, working at the same publication.

  9. The full, unedited 60 Minutes segment about Venezuelan deportees at CECOT prison—initially pulled by CBS News chief Bari Weiss—was released online after Canadian broadcaster Global TV aired the original version. Weiss said it wasn’t ready, citing the need for more thorough reporting and interviews, but the episode aired in Canada anyway. This reveals tensions over journalistic standards and control, raising questions about editorial independence and transparency. With the story now accessible worldwide, it exposes powerful testimony of torture and human rights abuses, underscoring the importance of responsible journalism. Could this shift impact CBS’s internal debates? More here: hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-ne #Journalism #60Minutes #CBS #Media #InvestigativeReporting #FreedomOfPress #HumanRights

  12. GamersNexus continues doing some of the most aggro investigative reporting in technology coverage.

Here's their announcement and fundraising video for the AI Surveillance Dystopia series:

These are, yes, the same people who did the best in-depth coverage of tariffs that I saw, and did the big three-hour documentary on GPU smuggling.

They're going after the Nvidia/Palintir links, and in particular Nvidia's big shift into fascist politics when anti-trust started investigating them under Biden. Also NZXT's predatory computer "rental" programme and other projects.

In between, you know, running benchmarks on computer case airflow and graphics card performance and stuff.

With this stunning act of “preemptive self-censorship,” we now have little cause to doubt the obsequious, servile moral cowardice of Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post leadership!💢

  18. Sad news from the #Canadian magazine Hakai, @hakaimagazine, -- a source of great, in-depth stories about our planet's coastal regions. A stalwart of excellent #journalism which covered important #environmental topics, as well as political, #climate, sea life, social topics and more. The magazine is closing. Excerpts from an announcement:
"The only way to deliver this bad news is bluntly: #Hakai Magazine will cease to publish at the end of 2024. For nearly a decade, we’ve made our cozy berth within the Tula Foundation, voyaging alongside its core missions that conduct long-term ecological research in British Columbia and deliver essential healthcare of Guatemalan mothers and babes. It has been a privilege beyond measure.

This journey has been a profound experience for us. Through our work with talented freelance editors, writers, photographers, and videographers, we’ve sailed through realms both familiar and uncharted. Whether diving into the minutiae of marine life or portraying panoramic vistas of oceanic wonder, each tale bore the unmistakable Hakai-take: clarity, accuracy, insight, and a generous splash of literary finesse. Your unwavering support and enthusiasm have been the backbone of our efforts, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

No doubt, we are sad. But we have adjusted to the news and we’re committed to finding a new outlet where we can continue to publish stories with our signature keen insight into all things coastal and oceanic. We’re actively looking for new funding sources—if you have ideas, please get in touch, because we’re open to suggestions. Over the next six months, we will keep you informed of our progress in finding a new haven for our next chapter...
Although we will no longer be publishing new content at hakaimagazine.com after 2024, the Tula Foundation will support and maintain the Hakai Magazine website in perpetuity, continuing to make our archives freely available to everyone. If you have any questions, thoughts, or want to tell us what you love about Hakai #magazine please reach out. We value your feedback and would love to hear from you."
