I’m sure others have drawn this analogy, or even that it’s an intentional design model, but Mastodon instances feel like local ISPs from the early commercial internet to me. The local timeline feels like local Usenet groups; the federated timeline feels like the Usenet subscriptions supported at that ISP. Your identity being tied to the ISP’s email domain is similar, too.
I wonder if instances will evolve similarly, too. (I hope not.)

I've seen a few other posts on this; for me, too, Mastodon gives early Internet vibes, where you had to find (or in my case generally stumble across) a community that fit you. Pros - you may feel safer and more understood. Cons - easier to get stuck in a rut and not encounter people from outside you're usual circles.
I think the tag system will help here. Search for what interests you, even only a little, and explore!

I've seen a few other posts on this; for me, too, Mastodon gives early Internet vibes, where you had to find (or in my case generally stumble across) a community that fit you. Pros - you may feel safer and more understood. Cons - easier to get stuck in a rut and not encounter people from outside you're usual circles.
