  1. Oh hey! Apparently #InsectThursday is a thing. So here you go. Found this guy relaxing next to the roof rails on the Subie and he hung out long enough for me to grab the camera. I moved him before I drove off.

  6. CW: crazy cool multicolour metallic sparkly wasp on flowers

I've been mentioning this #wasp for ages finally got photos edited. I said green + red, but it's also blue + gold!
As crazy as this looks, I learned there are other species with even brighter / wilder markings! Still, I'm thrilled to have seen this, even more so that it hung around long enough and still enough that I could get lots of photos 🙂

  9. CW: cool wasp mimic fly on flowers

I'm used to seeing lots of bee/wasp mimic flies and most of them don't fool me at all-- this one had me for a minute till I got a better look! Stratiomys sp Soldier Fly on Anthriscus sylvestris Ravenswing in the garden.

  10. CW: cool looking fly on plant

Hmm I could make this #InsectThursday or #InsectFriday or how about #FlyDay
Anyway, this cool customer was in the garden last #June so I guess #ThrowbackThursday works too 😉
Funny:posted it on iNaturalist, their system recognised right away that it was a photo of a Lonicera/Honeysuckle - the plant the fly is sitting on- from the close-cropped photo! Impressive, except it didn't notice the fly at all..

  17. We found several more well-camouflaged jagged ambush bugs (𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢 sp.) in the goldenrods (𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘨𝘰 sp.) on last Sunday's hike. Here's one:

  18. Oleander aphids (𝘈𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘪) on swamp milkweed (𝘈𝘴𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢), from July 2022.

Interestingly, these little critters are all female; no males are found in the wild. They reproduce by parthenogenesis.

  23. CW: spider (with live young?)

I thought this #spider looked bumpy, but viewing on the computer screen, it seems like those could be its young, all over its back? About the size of common wolf spider here in #CentralAlberta, on the ground on the sunny, hot side of the house, amid some spray foam insulation. #Arachnid #InsectThursday ( I know, but spiders have traditionally been included..lol)

  25. CW: bee + butterfly on flowers

@plants @nature #InsectThursday we've had some cool days, a few quite warm, and lots of moderate days, good amount of sunshine, and plenty of rain-- so things are green and flowering, and #insect life is thriving! Probably the most #butterflies and moths I've ever seen and plenty of #bees and Flower Flies (missing, though, are bigger wasps- Yellowjackets and Bald-Faced-weird!).

  26. I had more photos for #Invertefest but didn't have time to get them posted in time..lol Here we are instead for #InsectThursday This was the first #WildBee of the year (pre-dated by a few non-native honeybee sightings, and now joined by several bumblebees, but no shots of those yet). The shots were over several days on or near one of the #RockGarden beds in front of the house. I *think* it may be the same one (never saw more than one individual at a time)- but won't swear to it! #bees #Alberta

  27. Okay, another combo post or #mashup as the youngsters might say 😉 First #butterflies of the year (Aglais milbertii Fire-rim Tortoiese Shell + Nymphalis antiopa Mourning cloak- 2 beautiful butterflies with great Latin names!) for #InsectThursday (saw first bees too, but another post for that).
First #flowers of the year- Salix sp #pussywillows for #FlowersOnFriday + the ongoing return of dramatic #clouds rounding out #SixOnSaturday
