  2. CW: Caterpillar, live bug

Look at this buddy! The fastest caterpillar I've ever seen. I'm not quite sure on the id, but I'm leaning towards a Salt Marsh Moth, Estigmene acrea. #InsectThursday #zone7b #catterpillar #buggie #cutie #aroundthegarden

  3. CW: Jewel-like Fly on Flowers

I don't have a lot of time for scrolling, but trying to focus on #nature and art kinda stuff at the moment..lol I see enough news when I watch the news, can use a break from the craziness...lol
I thought I was dipping back to #August for some random shots, ended up in 2022.. why not..lol
    Here's a beautiful #Syrphid #FlowerFly on a native Erigeron/Fleabane in the #garden and maybe or not the same one on Symphytum/Comfrey #InsectThursday #BloomScrolling #FlyDay #Alberta

  4. CW: beetle on flower

    #WildflowerWednesday #WildflowerHour + #invert #InsectThursday
A bit of a cheat on the first 2 # : this is a native but not local Erigeron that I haven't settled on an id for; from seed collected in the foothills, it's in a semi-xeric berm/ #RockGarden.
The star of these shots, though, is of course the Trichodes ornatus Ornate Checkered #Beetle one of the prettiest local beetles I've had the pleasure to see- a few times in recent summers. #insects #nature #Alberta #gardening

  5. We found several more well-camouflaged jagged ambush bugs (๐˜—๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข sp.) in the goldenrods (๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฐ sp.) on last Sunday's hike. Here's one:

Interestingly, these little critters are all female; no males are found in the wild. They reproduce by parthenogenesis.

  19. Okay, another combo post or #mashup as the youngsters might say ๐Ÿ˜‰ First #butterflies of the year (Aglais milbertii Fire-rim Tortoiese Shell + Nymphalis antiopa Mourning cloak- 2 beautiful butterflies with great Latin names!) for #InsectThursday (saw first bees too, but another post for that).
First #flowers of the year- Salix sp #pussywillows for #FlowersOnFriday + the ongoing return of dramatic #clouds rounding out #SixOnSaturday

  20. @plants @nature Another (late ๐Ÿ˜† ) #Throwback to #July #InsectThursday #FlowersOnFriday + #FlyDay +early #WildflowerHour Illustrating the value of as wide a range of flowering plants as possible, both many natives and exotics- especially those that extend the season at times fewer natives are flowering (here that's both early + late, though I do have non-natives flowering all summer).

  21. CW: flies on flowers

@plants @nature #InsectThursday #ThrowbackThursday late #June + some of the vast number of #pollinators that enjoy Gypsophila repens over its season long #flowering! These are a cool Syrphid Fly #FlowerFly (so many beauties in this family-flying jewels!) and a fierce looking Tachinid Fly- their larvae are parasitic on other insects(if you want insect populations in balance, you need lots of species of insects!) adults active on #flowers #NaturalGardening #Alberta #biodiversity
