#Brazil’s 🇧🇷 National Institute for #SpaceResearch is rapidly losing funding 💵, brains 🧠 - and hope. In the 📆 1970s, it became the first #SpaceAgency in any country to monitor forests 🌳 using #satellite 🛰️ data. Data from #PRODES and #DETER helped Brazil create and enforce policies that were key to reducing annual #deforestation 🪓 in the #Amazon by 82% between 📆 2004 and 2014.
The decline 📉 accelerated after #Bolsonaro took office, despite his campaign promises to prioritize #science. His government cut MCTI’s overall budget by 35% in the first 3 years of his administration. #INPE’s annual budget plunged by 63% from 2010. Today, 9/28/2023 the unit of the National Institute for Space Research in Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil completes 53 years of existence.

There is located the only permanent balloon launch facility in the country known as Setor de Lancamento de Baloes (SLB).

SLB has a rich history with almost 40 balloons launched between 1980 and 2008.

Very rare image of a stratospheric balloon launch from Brazil's Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station.

During the 1985 summer campaign, two stratospheric balloon experiments were conducted by the Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE).

Two balloons were launched on February 10 and 21 to measure the atmospheric X-Rays and Gamma rays.

Das brasilianische Nationale #Institut für #Weltraumforschung (#INPE) meldet zwischen Anfang #August #2021 und Ende #Juli #2022 einen 11%igen #Rückung der #Regenwald-#Abholzung gegenüber dem #Vergleichszeitraum des #Vorjahr|es.
Die 2022 entstandene #Kahlstelle entspricht immer noch der doppelten #Fläche des #Ruhrgebiet|s. Zu viel, viel zu viel.
Hoffentlich ändert sich das unter #Lula schnell. Die #Hoffnung bleibt.
