I often get accused of not being a birder because I'm fanatically on "team cat". Now, I will admit that birds are not my prime focus, and if there's a wild cat anywhere in the vicinity, birds will entirely disappear from my eyesight. But I do like and photograph birds, honest.

During massive wildfires in the area in a few years ago, researchers saw the jaguars using the culverts under the roads for shelter against the fires. They subsequently convinced the local ranchers to put more culverts in just for the jaguars. The cats now use the culverts even just for shade in the middle of the day.

This amazing cat, after jumping from a tree and nailing this caiman bigger than she is, wrestled its dead body to the bank before going back a half a mile or so to get her cubs to share in the meal. The power and stamina of these jaguars is just unbelievable.

We were lucky to be able to watch a hunt yesterday. This big girl named Masala was hunting caimans in the river from up in the trees. Incredibly exciting to see her ply her trade. She was so blazingly fast when she took off, I'm surprised I got that shot. And yes, she got the caiman.
