CW: Ubuntu, Gnu Image Manipulation Program, Flatpak, Immutable OS
Today's reboot day so I let Ubuntu update itself. I experienced the usual shenanigans on that including it checking for updates immediately following reboot despite my settings and, of course, finding more updates requiring an update.
There was a new thing that happened today, though.
I had previously uninstalled the version of Gnu Image Manipulation Program (Imp) installed by Ubuntu because it was perpetually out of date. I installed the Flatpak version and even built a shim script so I could launch Imp from the command line because sometimes I need that.
The Flatpak version of 3.2.6 immediately and always crashes on launch no matter which way you attempt to launch it. I uninstalled it and, in the process of doing that, I discovered that Ubuntu Studio seemed to have switched to the Flatpak version on its own because there was a System Wide version of it in addition to the one I had installed myself. Both were on the same version. Uninstalling both and only installing the user version didn't solve.
So I ended up downloading the AppImage version and doing all the workarounds needed to get it added as a File Association and edited my shim script so I can use it from the command line again.
On an immutable OS, I'd be shit out of luck. Not the only reason why Immutable OS is a really bad idea. It is a strong reason it's a bad idea.
