  1. I could see myself taking on an insect photography hobby if I didn't already have too many hobbies. There are constant opportunities in this place at this time of year. An iPhone is not the best camera for this work, but sometimes it does ok!

I rescued this pregnant mantis from my wheelbarrow where she appeared miraculously unharmed after having a pile of dried weeds atop her.

After clinging to the stem I offered, she found herself in a much better place full of tall plants and insects. One even surprised us by being on the tansy where I placed her!

I wanted to capture how she was staring at it, but she turned to look at my phone when it moved into view.

  2. Surrounded by dragonflies today, trying to get a good picture while saying hi to the cat walking by when a hawk spirals above before moving on.

They were right about installing poles everywhere. There's a queue of dragonflies on this one. One takes off and another immediately takes her place.

  3. I manifested myself some Jerusalem artichokes* this week!

    * They are neither artichokes nor from Jerusalem. They are American sunflowers.

I was thinking a few days ago about how my dad grew them, and how unless my mom exterminated them they're still thriving at her house, but that it's not worth talking to her or driving five hours each way to get them.

Then my massage therapist mentioned them. The second I repeated the word, she said OH DO YOU WANT SOME???

Now I need the energy to plant them before they die. I just stuck a bunch into the ground in one spot. Got a few more spots to go.

They'll do fine on their own after this.

They grow densely and 8' tall, and as far as you let them go. I'm hoping for a couple of nice shade barriers next year. The roots are like twisted potatoes and apparently yummy.

  4. I started a nice chat with a guy at the water station queue today. He was filling some 35gal containers and I asked him about his setup.

Regular type chat, you know, about how planting too many berry bushes will attract grizzlies and which part of the county has the worst internet service. How the 5' deep frost line affects underground cisterns and how you can tell when a grizzly is outside because your RV will shake if she brushes against it.

    Just regular north Idaho chatter.

  5. I like for Midnight to go outside every few days in winter, otherwise she goes stir crazy. But even if she wanted out today, I won't let her.

  6. It's been snowing for the better part of a week, with slight melts each day.

Today, the snow and ice has begun falling off the roofs. (This is a north Idaho weather condition.) It's actually dangerous outside!

  7. The cold snap is coming *tonight*. It says it won't last long, but I can't count on weather reports outside of a rough guide, so I should prepare.

The compost pile needs to be turned one more time before it freezes solid, so there's room for more kitchen scraps. So I'm hoping to get out there while the sun shines. It's a balmy 29F.

  8. Once again, it is painfully beautiful out here. I don't want to go in, because it's hot inside, but so overstimulating out here.

The crickets and clicking beetles are louder than my rock music.

    The sun is everywhere.

    Dandelions enshrouded in halo.

That burns the heat on my skin.
