@curiousordinary @terrywallwork according to https://www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/welcomesuica/welcomesuica.html the "welcome #Suica" is still available to tourists at airport sales points.
(when chips are the limiting factor, why a limited-validity card is still provided and not a reusable one, escapes me, but not all decisions are logical.)
Or if you're flying into Osaka, https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/howto/guide/movie03.html gives no indication (unless I missed it) that the regular #ICOCA is no longer sold. -
And… done! My #ICOCA physical card successfully transferred into #AppleWallet! It’s nice to see their servers are holding up OK today 🙂
Of course I’m not going to throw away the physical card – it’s a nice memento!

Interestingly it supports transferring existing physical #ICOCA cards into Wallet at launch (like #Suica), unlike on Android where this functionality still isn’t available.
With the Yen’s exchange rate the way it is, if you’re planning on visiting #Japan soon it’s a good time to add a card (or two!) and load it up!

It only took a couple of months after #PASMO announced they'd be supporting #ApplePay / #AppleWallet for them to actually launch it, so if #ICOCA were to follow roughly the same timeline then in theory it could launch as soon as next week (their announcement was on 17 April).
But that assumes they've already been working on it long before the announcement. They seemed a bit on the back foot when originally quizzed about it. If not, maybe another few months? Time will tell!

Yesterday JR West officially announced that #ICOCA for Apple Wallet is coming this year! 🎉

(When PASMO announced Apple Wallet support it was two months until it was released, so maybe ICOCA will be similar? 🤞)
