#HX thought; In online platforms, specialisation requires decentralisation.
In decentralised networks, each app is a garden available to anyone in the network to visit. So they are free to focus on doing one set of things well.
Walled gardens must compete with each other by imitation. Trying to be all things to all people, so they don't lose them to competitors.

I want a "Triggered" button on social media apps, that I can push when a post upsets me. Pushing the button would grey out the reply button for 24 hours. It might also notify me when that time has passed.

"It's valuable for us to provide tools that allow users to control their own experience. Because I think that's the most conducive to broad education."

"The way we practice design today is colonial. It is no different than the ethnographer hiding behind their camouflaged screen, watching the natives."
@aral, 2018

Ethnography, and anthropology in general, does have a dark past. But AFAIK ethnography is observing as a participant, not hiding in the bushes.

#EtherPad is a cool piece of software. Think of it as a web version of those giant rolls of paper people use for brainstorming sessions at social centres. Each roll of paper, or 'pad', is easily accessible to anyone who has a link to it.
It's Free Code, and I use community-hosted versions of it all the time (thanks to Disroot, RiseUp, and others).
However, one problem I see with the #HX (Human eXperience) of EtherPad is...

This is a great example of good #HX design outside of software.
"Japanese brewers include braille on their beer cans to prevent the blind from mistaking alcohol for soft drinks."
Let's say none of the organic beer brand did this. The blind are a minority. You could argue that supporting more sustainable production methods is more important than solidarity with the disabled. But that's beside the point.
Which is that organic brewers can and should put braille on their cans too.

Hey @element devs, getting #notifications for emoji reactions is very annoying. Especially when there's no way to click on a particular notification and get taken to the message or reaction it's related to.

Identifying poor #HX (Human eXperience) in Free Code apps is not a condemnation of volunteer developers or their work. It's an explanation for people hesitating to use it.
An explanation that points to what can be done by those who want more people to make the switch. Especially in risk-averse and resource-constrained organisations like public service agencies, news media, and political parties.

Me:
> There's only one other thing I'd change about TubaSince then I've noticed one other thing. The compose window is a pop-up. But it's not a separate window, so you can't go back to the rest of the app, eg to copy text for quoting in a reply.
For replies at least, I would either;
* embed them in the main app, under the post being replied to* make the pop-up a full window, that can be minimised and worked around

"We've always had a tension between enterprise design practices and a 'small pieces, loosely joined' way of making software... The advantages to the latter are in part described in Worse is Better and The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Situated software is in the small pieces category, with the following additional characteristic -- it is designed for use by a specific social group, rather than for a generic set of 'users'."

I was thinking about the barbeque (BBQ) and banquet model, for two different kinds of HX (Human eXperience) of chat:
https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2018/05/16/banquets-and-barbecues/
I want to tweak the metaphor a bit, to make it a BBQ and a boardroom.

It just occurred to me that it could be really useful to have a standardised HX (Human eXperience) rating system for Free Code apps. With a regular review process (eg annual) by a group of HX experts who support software freedom, and a set of trademarked symbols illustrating the ratings. Once reviewed, app projects could display the symbol on their homepage, if they want to.

Thinking about the way a Discourse forum slowly trusts people with more functionality, the longer they spend using it as a member in good standing. What if fediverse servers did the same thing? Gradually delegating more and more access to levers that are now admin-only, eg the ability to subscribe the server to relays.

Is this an unpopular opinion?
I hate smart content suggestions in content consumption apps like podcasts apps, spotify, news apps, youtube, my freaking xbox dashboard, you name it.
I much rather prefer apps that let me build my own lists, layouts and - in general - streams of information. With no way for them to roll algo dices and present me with a wall of distraction.
