Arthur Shilling (1941-1986)

Born on the Rama Reserve, near Orillia, Ontario into an Ojibwa family of thirteen children, Shilling started drawing as a small child and later carved wooden totem poles. Using oil on canvas, he depicted life on the Rama Reserve, where, eventually he built an art gallery to encourage local talent

His life is documented in the film The Beauty of My People (1978).

“Vincenza was my grandmother and a fundamental part of my family history. I wanted to represent her in a moment of her everyday life, sitting in the middle of the kitchen, illuminated from above by a chandelier that, like a spotlight, highlights the features of almost a century of life.”

The oil on aluminum panel painting was the Third Prize winner BP Portrait Award 2019, National Portrait Gallery

“Vincenza lived each day as if it was her last and often told me: ‘you'll see that tomorrow, I’ll be gone.’”. She passed away in 2021.
